The next morning, Jay woke up earlier than usual. The sunlight came through the window of his room, and he could already hear noise from downstairs.
“Jay! Hurry up!” his little brother Bill shouted.
Jay rubbed his eyes. “Why are you shouting so early?”
Bill ran into the room excitedly.
“I told my friends my big brother joined the football team at Bridgewater High School!”
Jay laughed. “You didn’t even see the final team list yet.”
Bill folded his arms proudly. “I know you’ll make it.”
Downstairs, their mother placed breakfast on the table while their father read the newspaper.
“Ready for your second day?” his father asked.
Jay nodded. “Yeah. I think it’s going to be interesting.”
When Jay arrived at Bridgewater High School, the hallways were already busy. Students walked quickly to their classrooms while others talked with friends.
As Jay walked toward his locker, someone tapped him on the shoulder.
He turned around.
It was Marcus Reed.
“Good news,” Marcus said with a grin.
“What?”
“The football coach posted the list this morning.”
Jay felt a little nervous. “And?”
Marcus smiled widely.
“You made the team!”
Jay couldn’t help smiling.
“Really?”
“Of course,” Marcus said. “Your move yesterday impressed the coach.”
Just then two familiar voices came from behind them.
“Congratulations, Jay.”
Jay turned around and saw Mia Smith and her best friend Lily Carter.
“Thanks,” Jay said.
Lily held up her camera.
“I even have a picture of your winning run yesterday,” she said proudly.
Marcus laughed. “Looks like Jay is becoming famous already.”
Mia smiled slightly.
“You were really good yesterday,” she told Jay.
Jay felt a little shy but replied, “Thanks… I was just trying my best.”
The school bell rang loudly.
“Geography class,” Marcus said. “We better hurry before Mr. John Smith starts the lesson.”
Inside the classroom, maps and globes covered the walls again.
Mr. Smith began the class by asking questions about different countries and continents.
“Today,” he said, writing on the board, “we will learn about mountains and rivers of the world.”
Halfway through the lesson, he gave the class a project.
“You will work in groups of three,” Mr. Smith explained. “Each group will prepare a presentation about a famous geographical feature.”
Students quickly began forming groups.
Marcus looked at Jay.
“Let’s team up.”
Before Jay could answer, Mia spoke.
“Jay can join Lily and me,” she suggested.
Lily nodded happily.
“Yes! Our group will be perfect.”
Marcus shrugged and smiled. “Alright. I’ll join another group then.”
Mr. Smith wrote several topics on the board.
Mia raised her hand.
“Sir, can our group work on the Nile River?”
“Excellent choice,” Mr. Smith said.
Jay smiled. “This should be interesting.”
After class, the three of them walked toward the library to begin their research.
The library at Bridgewater High was very large and quiet. Tall shelves filled with books stood everywhere.
Lily wandered around with curiosity.
“Wow… this place is huge.”
While they searched for books about rivers, Jay noticed something strange at the back of the library.
There was an old wooden door that looked different from the others.
It had a small sign on it that read:
AUTHORIZED STAFF ONLY
Jay looked at it curiously.
“What do you think is behind that door?” he asked quietly.
Mia looked at it too.
“I’ve never seen anyone go inside.”
Lily whispered dramatically, “Maybe it’s a secret room.”
Jay smiled.
For some reason, he had a feeling that this mysterious door might lead to something important.
And this was only the beginning of another adventure at Bridgewater High School.
