CHAPTER 15: ALLIANCES AND BETRAYALS

741 Words
The first of the seven days passed with unrelenting tension. While the outer disciples sharpened weapons and fortified walls, the inner halls of Azure Dragon Sect became a crucible of politics and distrust. Ye Qing sat within the Hall of Silent Winds, a secluded chamber once used by elders to resolve disputes away from prying eyes. Now, it served a different purpose—his sanctuary and his war room. A candle flickered beside him as maps of sect territories and reports from outer scouts lay unfurled before him. According to the latest intelligence, at least six mid-tier righteous sects had begun mobilizing their disciples—likely in preparation to support the Heaven Sect. The balance of power was rapidly shifting. Just as Ye Qing was reviewing the final report, Elder Mei arrived in haste. “They’re moving faster than we thought,” she said, handing him another sealed scroll. “The Silver Mist Valley Sect has pledged allegiance to the Heaven Sect. That makes three confirmed alliances now.” Ye Qing’s brow furrowed. “Cowards hiding behind divine names. They fear the fall of the old order more than they crave justice.” Before Mei could reply, the heavy doors creaked open again. This time, it was Lan Zixuan, the sect master’s niece and one of the most brilliant strategists of the younger generation. Her icy eyes carried a blade’s sharpness. “There’s something worse,” she said coldly. “We have a traitor.” The word hung in the air like poison. Ye Qing stood slowly. “Speak.” Lan Zixuan laid out a small jade talisman, cracked and drained of its qi. “This was found hidden beneath the southern warding stone. Someone was siphoning barrier energy—weakening our defenses from within. Subtle, but intentional.” Ye Qing clenched his fist. “Any suspects?” Lan Zixuan hesitated. “One of the outer elders—Elder Zhou. He’s long voiced his opposition to your presence. Two of his disciples recently left the sect under suspicious circumstances.” Elder Mei’s eyes narrowed. “If Elder Zhou is collaborating with the Heaven Sect, then they already have eyes within our walls.” Ye Qing stepped toward the map. “We don’t have the luxury of time to root out every serpent. But if there’s betrayal, it must be exposed swiftly—and publicly.” --- Later that night, under the blood moon, Ye Qing summoned a gathering in the central courtyard. Hundreds of disciples and elders assembled, murmuring in confusion. Elder Zhou stood near the front, his face unreadable. Ye Qing stepped forward, voice resonating across the stone platform. “The Heaven Sect thinks us fractured. That our trust is weak. Tonight, we prove them wrong.” He held up the cracked jade talisman. “This was discovered at the southern warding stone, compromised by one among us.” Gasps spread through the crowd. Elder Zhou’s face twitched slightly. “I do not make accusations lightly,” Ye Qing continued. “But the truth leaves a trail.” He gestured, and Lan Zixuan stepped forward with a memory crystal—a recording from a shadow formation. It displayed Elder Zhou’s disciples tampering with the sect’s formation core. The sect exploded in outrage. Zhou stepped forward in fury. “You manipulate evidence! You twist perception as your bloodline twists the truth!” But Bai Zheng himself had entered the courtyard. “I reviewed the crystal,” the sect master said gravely. “The betrayal is clear.” Zhou paled. “I gave this sect my life!” “And now you trade its life for your fear,” Bai Zheng answered coldly. “You are stripped of title, qi sealed, and cast out.” --- As Elder Zhou was dragged away, Ye Qing spoke once more. “The Heaven Sect does not fear my bloodline. They fear what I represent: change. But betrayal will not be tolerated. We stand as one, or we fall divided.” Cheers erupted from the disciples. The inner circle watched in silence—some with awe, others with wariness. --- That night, Lan Zixuan met Ye Qing alone at the overlooking cliffs. “You sent a message tonight,” she said. “But don’t forget—there are others like Zhou. They won’t strike in the open.” Ye Qing looked at the stars. “Let them hide. I’ll burn every shadow they crawl into.”
