The Shadow in the Forest

756 Words
The fog in Evergreen was thick as soup, clinging to the trees like a lover’s embrace that refused to let go, and it made the forest feel alive, whispering secrets that no human ear was meant to hear, secrets that had been buried for centuries in the damp earth and the twisted roots. I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was being watched, a constant prickle at the back of my neck that started the day after Lucian’s kiss in my room, a kiss that left my lip tingling for hours, the taste of cold eternity on my tongue, and Kai’s warm bite mark on my neck from the beach, a reminder of the fire he ignited inside me. School became a battlefield of glances, Lucian sitting in the back, his golden eyes flickering red when he thought no one was looking, his body tense like a coiled spring ready to snap, while Kai sat next to me in English, his hand brushing mine under the desk, sending sparks of heat up my arm that made it hard to focus on the teacher’s lecture about forbidden love in Romeo and Juliet, which felt too close to home. After school, Kai insisted on walking me home again, his arm around my shoulders, protective against the chill wind that howled through the trees, carrying the scent of pine and something wild, something animalistic that I couldn’t place, and as we walked the path near the forest, he stopped suddenly, his body stiffening like he heard a sound I couldn’t. “What’s wrong?” I asked, my heart pounding, the fog swirling around us like ghosts, the trees creaking in the wind as if they were alive and watching us with hidden eyes. “Nothing,” he said, but his voice was low, a growl almost, and he pulled me closer, his heat seeping through my jacket, making me feel safe yet strangely alive, like my blood was singing a song only he could hear. We reached my house, and he kissed me goodbye, deep and passionate, his hands cupping my face, his thumb tracing my jaw, and I melted into him, forgetting the cold, forgetting Lucian, forgetting the strange pull that tugged at me from the shadows. Inside, Dad was at work, the house empty, and I went to my room, stripping off my wet clothes, the mirror fogged from the humidity, but as I wiped it, I saw the mark on my lip from Lucian’s bite — healed, but a faint scar remained, and on my neck, Kai’s teeth mark, red and bruised, a contrast of cold and hot on my skin. A tap at the window. Lucian. Again. I opened it, anger mixing with desire. “How do you get in here?” He climbed in, rain dripping from his dark hair, his shirt clinging to his perfect body, outlining muscles that looked carved from marble. “I need to talk to you.” “About Kai?” “About you.” He stepped close, cold air radiating from him, but his eyes were fire. “Your blood… it’s special.” I backed up. “What does that mean?” He grabbed my arm — cold grip. “It means you could change everything for my kind. For me.” His lips crashed on mine. Cold. Intense. His tongue demanding. Hands pinning me to the wall. I kissed back, fire building. His fangs grazed my tongue. Blood. He sucked gently. Groaned. “God, you taste like life.” His hand under my shirt, cold palm on my hot skin. I gasped. Pleasure dark. Intense. He lifted me, legs around his waist. Carried me to the bed. Stripped me. Mouth on my breast, cold tongue circling. Fangs grazing n****e. I arched, moaning. His hand between my legs. Cold fingers inside. Pleasure overwhelming. I came gasping his name. He didn’t stop. Entered me slow — cold hardness. Every thrust controlled. Deep. I scratched his back. He growled. Fangs in my neck. Bit. Drank. Ecstasy. I came again, bond flaring. He came with a roar. Held me. “I love you, Isabella.” I looked at him. “Cold love.” “Eternal.” Kai knocked at the door. Lucian gone. Fast. I opened. Kai. “You okay?” I nodded. But the bite on my neck burned. The transformation starting. The choice impossible. The war between vampire and werewolf. Because of me. The human girl in love with monsters. The rain poured harder. And my world changed forever.
