Whisper in the Dark

Chapter 10

It is still dark when Ritro wakes the girls. He wanted to get moving as soon as possible.

"Come we have to get moving."

Alexa turns over in her bed and buries her head into the pillow, mumbling incoherent words.

"We don't have time for that! Come on!" His frustration evident. He made it very clear the night before that they will be leaving as early as possible.

Both girls get up with a lot of effort and sluggishly drag their bodies behind Ritro. The sky is still dark although it is mostly dark or overcast-looking due to the thick fog that constantly hangs over the planet. Alexa holds her head after recalling all the events of last night. What did she do? Did she really sleep with a man older than her father. She can't say that she regrets it at all, but that it was such a good thing to do, maybe not. Regardless, she shrugs off the doubts and continues walking. It happened and there is nothing she can do about it now. She did not really care, she has lost so much already, what is a virginity in the scheme of things? Not to mention that is was really good. Everyone always said it would be so sore on her first time but it wasn't. Her body does ache all over but not a bad ache. She really enjoyed it and can't complain at all. If she knew s*x could be this good she would have done it a long time ago. Maybe that was the plus point of having s*x with someone who has experience. She never knew her body could do the things he did to it.

"You seem very caught up in your thoughts," Soraya questioned her sister. Alexa quickly shaked her head and looked at her sister.

"It is nothing, I am just thinking about everything that has happened so far," Alexa quickly lies to her sister.

"Where are we going by the way?" Alexa asks Ritro.

"We are actually going to the next town. I have some people to meet there regarding work. If all goes well I will have work for the next three months sowing."

"What do you mean if all goes well?" Alexa frowns as she looks at Ritro.

"Like I told you before . . . Work does not come easy here and for someone in my position I have to travel from town to town, village to village and take whatever comes up so that I can just have some kind of employment. And yes, I have tried and am still trying to find stable work to be able to build a stable life and settle, get married and hopefully be blessed with children."

Alexa immediately feels happy about this revelation. Maybe he is her one and she can find some kind of happiness on the planet. Ritro seems like a decent hard-working individual. She thinks he will make a good father one day. Soraya looks at her sister while she is grinning. Clearly something is up between these two or from Alexa's side at least. She just hopes the feeling is reciprocated so that her sister does not get hurt.

She can't stay calm with everything that has been going on. Why has he been so quiet and where are they now? This man can be so infuriating and she knows he is doing it on purpose just to piss her off. He hates it when she reduces him to a servant and even more to a boy. She, however, loved it. It just made her feel more . . . powerful, if she can even put it like that. Nevermind, her s****l abusiveness, she needed answers and she wanted them now. Where is this arrogant man?

The thought barely crept into her mind when Ronan enters into her chambers carrying something in his hands. He takes quick strides to her before stopping in front of her and holding his hand palm up with a piece of hair in it.

"I asked you for this a while ago. Why did it take you so long?" Her annoyance is evident in her voice. If he moved faster she would not need him.

"I did what I could. You did not say you needed it when they were here. It would have made things easier." Ronan was not having her attitude with him. She could have said earlier that she needed this sample of the girls' hair. It would have been a lot easier to get a hold of it when they were still in confinement.

"What do you need it for?"

"You will soon see." As she is speaking she moves to her mirror on the wall and chants a spell before making the hair levitate and bond with the mirror. Immediately the mirror starts displaying the girls and where they are moving in black and white with colourful auras surrounding them. Now she could keep an eye on them and see exactly their emotion is without needing Ronan to keep her in the loop. She should have thought about this earlier. She could have made things so much easier for herself and with this little trick she can move easily between her palace and where they are without trouble. The mirror will double as a portal. It is a pity she cannot watch it 24/7 and therefore, she will still need Ronan to keep an eye on the girls as well.

Ronan grunts at her while she stands there proud of her accomplishment. Now with her being able to monitor the girls so attentively she will hopefully not realize that he lied about the Nommo incident. Soraya should just keep that bit of information to herself and keep her trap shut. That wretched tribe has been a thorn in their side for far too long time. They should just die out and get it over with.

Vaneska studies the girls as they walk in the forest. This will truly help her to keep tabs on them.

"Now let the games begin."

After a long day of walking the group finally reaches the village Ritro was heading to. He walks into the center of the town and speaks to some of the men before walking back to the girls.

"This is my stop. They said that there are still more men needed. I don't like goodbyes and especially since I do not know where you girls will be heading to. Let us have one more night of fun before I will need to leave you girls. Maybe I can find you some place to live here so that I can be close by." Alexa finds his gesture sweet but Soraya is not very phased by it. Nothing he says can persaude her otherwise. She still does not trust him.

"That would be great but don't go out of your way. I am sure we will find something. I think we will need to find work as soon as possible to be able to survive." Alexa says to Ritro. He looks a bit surprised but quickly recomposes himself.

"I think I might be able to help. Will you girls be able to work in the field?" Ronan asked with excitement on his face.

"Yeah, definitely!" Soraya beats Alexa in answering. The girls starts to giggle. Things might actually look up for them at this moment. Soraya would rather find work and make things better on her own than having to rely on Ritro's kindness.

After some time of walking around and introducing themselves to possible employers, the girls get offered jobs as maids in a local tavern. Ritro has offered for them to share his accommodation for now that he has managed to organize. It is small and has only one bedroom and a living space but it will have to do for now. At this point they are too grateful to have a roof over their heads.

"Doesn't the places have running water?" Soraya asks as she looks around at her environment. She was expecting something more similar to what they are used to on Earth.

"Uhm no, only the rich can afford such luxuries. Here it is old traditional bucket and candles. No electricity and no running water. There is a river close by and there we will have to get water everyday to wash and so on. There are times set out when the women go bathe and when the men bathe. Any other time it is a free for all. If you are caught spying on the opposite s*x you are immediately put to death, The people do not tolerate such behaviour at all." Ritro explains. "Families normally fill buckets and wash in their homes."

"Peeping toms!" Alexa chirps in.

"What is a people, uhm, Tom?" Ritro asks confused.

The girls start laughing before realizing no one here would know any references from their world.

"A peeping Tom is someone who spies on someone in their private moments without their knowledge or permission. It is rude and demeaning towards that person. Where we are from it is illegal as well." Soraya quickly answers Ritro.

"Well then no peeping Toms. I quite like the term. Think I should start using it. Think it will catch on quite quickly between the people. Well, let's get settled and sort out sleeping arrangements before we go to your new place of employment to get something to drink and eat."

"Sound like a plan." Soraya says. They haven't had a meal for the entire day. It has been quite a walk to the village and they are dirty, exhausted, and most of all hungry.

Ritro took the bed as he will be doing the more labour intensive work and the girls made a bed on the floor in the living area for them. They opted to not take the bedroom as Ritro suggested because it is so small for two people. They quickly made haste to get to the river as the gong sounded to alert people that the women can go to the river in safety. The girls were surprized at how strict the village is about keeping their women safe. Men stood with their backs towards the woman at some distance and guarded them to make sure no man can lay eyes on them. Others were patrolling further away behind a fence. The women quickly got undressed behind a shelter before walking into the water to wash the day off. Some washed their clothes as well, whereas others were busy washing their children, the little that there were. Once done the girls quickly took their now wet clothes they washed first and put them on over their wet bodies.

"We really need to get spare clothing if this is going to be our new homes." Alexa said to Soraya. Soraya just nodded her head at her sister's remark. It would be nice to have a clean change of clothes. They are not even sure if there is a change of seasons on this planet or is it the same year round? Do they even have a year? They should if they count their ages in years.
