Chapter 6:The Whispering Mark

731 Words
The forest did not feel the same after the night the stone reacted. Mina stood at the edge of the clearing, her fingers still tingling from what had happened. The strange glowing stone she had found in Chapter 5 was now wrapped carefully in a piece of cloth inside her small bag, but it wasn’t truly “quiet.” Even through the fabric, she could feel a faint pulse—like a heartbeat that wasn’t hers. The wind moved through the trees, but instead of the usual rustling leaves, Mina heard something else. Whispers. Soft. Broken. Like someone trying to speak from far away. “Mina…” She froze. Her eyes scanned the forest. The trees stood tall and still, their branches twisting like long fingers pointing deeper into the unknown. No one was there. At least, no one she could see. But the whisper came again. “Come… closer…” Her heart pounded. She should have run back home. She knew that. Every warning her grandmother ever told her came rushing back: Never answer voices in the forest. Never follow lights. Never trust what calls your name after sunset. But Mina wasn’t just scared anymore. She was curious. And something inside her felt… called. She slowly stepped forward. Each step into the forest made the air heavier, like she was walking through invisible water. The light from the sky dimmed, even though it was still afternoon. The trees seemed to lean inward, watching her. “Mina…” the voice whispered again, clearer now. “I’m here,” she said before she could stop herself. The moment she spoke, the cloth in her bag grew warm. Then hot. Mina quickly pulled it out. The stone had changed. Before, it was dull and cracked. Now, thin lines of glowing blue light ran across its surface like veins. They formed shapes she couldn’t understand… yet somehow felt familiar. The whispers stopped. Silence fell. And then the ground trembled. A thin line of light appeared between two roots ahead of her. It spread slowly, carving itself into the earth like an invisible blade. The soil parted, revealing something hidden beneath the forest floor. A door. Not made of wood or metal—but of stone covered in the same glowing symbols as her rock. Mina stepped closer, breath shaky. “What is this…” As she reached out, the stone in her hand lifted slightly on its own, as if responding. It floated from her palm and drifted toward the door. The moment it touched the surface— CLICK. The entire forest seemed to inhale. The door began to open. A burst of cold wind rushed out, carrying the smell of rain, dust, and something ancient. Mina stumbled backward, shielding her eyes as light spilled from the c***k widening in the ground. Inside was not darkness. It was a path. A glowing tunnel stretching deep underground, lined with the same shifting symbols, pulsing like stars trapped beneath the earth. And from within it came the whisper again—but this time it wasn’t calling her name. It was speaking a sentence. “The chosen has returned.” Mina’s breath caught. “Chosen…? Me?” The tunnel light flickered, responding like it had heard her. Suddenly, images flashed in her mind—fast and broken. A burning forest. A falling sky. A girl who looked like her, standing in front of the same stone, long ago. Mina stumbled, gripping a tree for balance. “No… that’s not me…” But the forest didn’t agree. The wind rose again, stronger this time, swirling around her like it was alive. The entrance to the tunnel widened further, waiting. Inviting. And then she understood something that made her stomach drop. The forest hadn’t just been hiding a secret. It had been waiting for her specifically. A loud c***k echoed behind her. Mina turned quickly. The trees at the edge of the clearing were shifting—moving into place like they were forming a barrier. The path back home was closing. She was being locked in. Her heart raced. “No, no, no…” The glowing tunnel pulsed again. One path forward. No way back. And then the whisper returned one last time, softer now… almost gentle. “Remember who you are.” Mina swallowed hard, gripping her bag tightly. Then, step by step, she walked into the light.
