Chapter 2 The Accident With No Survivors

1286 Words
As the truck kept moving, Victor was restrained by ropes on his hands and legs. The masked men made sure that Victor didn't try to escape. "Who are you guys and where are you taking me?" Victor mumbled in fear. "Who sent you guys? Is it Mister Wilson? Is it Sam, or perhaps Lady Herbert?" "Shut your trap or I'll do it for you!" One of the men barked angrily. "Come on, K POP, he won't live to see the sunlight anyway. At least he deserves to know who wants him gone," the masked guy on the right, who appeared to be the leader, stated. A wave of fear gripped Victor upon hearing what the masked guy just said. "I won't live to see the sunlight? Huh!" Victor mumbled to himself. "So this is how my miserable life will come to an end? Am I really not going to see my beautiful wife again? I haven't even achieved anything yet. I haven't even built my own legacy, let alone leaving someone behind to continue it," Victor mumbled in his spinning head. "Who could hate me this much to the extent of taking my life?" Victor questioned himself. "I have always received insults and humiliations without retaliating to any of it, so who could have wanted me dead?" He inquired further, but the only one who could give him a reply was the masked guy. "I know you guys must have received a hefty amount of money to get me killed, so I will not beg you to free me, but at least can I die knowing the person behind my death? I think knowing who got me killed will make me rest in peace," Victor pleaded. "Of course, I will tell you who paid us to eliminate you, but we weren't paid heavily. Any assassin could get the job done, so don't think highly of yourself." Victor swallowed hard as sweat dripped down from his hair. The word 'eliminate' shocked Victor to his very core. "I just want to know who sent you guys, please." "Well, if you must know..." Just as the Masked guy was about to disclose his employer's identity to Victor, as if struck by lightning, the van was sent spinning through the air. There was no doubt that their truck had been hit by a larger vehicle on their way out of town. As the truck spun in mid-air, Victor and all the masked guys slammed their bodies against every part of the truck. Everyone screamed loudly, fearing that this might be the end for them. Soon, the truck struck the ground heavily and rolled continuously until it finally came to a stop some distance away from where they were hit. Victor broke his neck and was unable to move. Glimpsing at the others who suffered a worse fate, he mumbled before slowly losing consciousness. "Is this how I die? Without knowing who wanted me dead?" With this haunting question lingering faintly in Victor's mind, he gave up the ghost. Three hours later, Lady Herbert's party came to an end, and all the prime guests exited the hotel. "It's already ten P M?" Emily stuttered as she glanced at her phone screen. She remembered Victor telling her that he would be waiting for her outside. "I'm sorry, but I must get back to my husband," Emily said to Sam, who had spent the evening trying to convince her to marry him instead of discussing business-related issues as he had promised. "Can I at least drop you off?" Sam offered to Emily. "I appreciate your offer, Sam, but I'll find my own way home," replied Emily with a forced smile that appeared genuine. "By 'finding your own way home,' do you mean riding with him in a truck?" Sam said with a disdainful expression. Emily ignored his comment and bid him farewell as she left the hall as well. Upon reaching the hotel's entrance, Emily couldn't spot Victor's truck where it was parked. "Did he leave already?" Emily questioned herself, scanning the premises in search of the truck. "I should give him a call," she thought to herself. Emily quickly took out her phone and called Victor. However, instead of reaching him, she heard his voicemail message. "Hey, it's me. Leave a message." Victor's recorded voice echoed. "That's not like him. Where could he have gone? Did the harsh words from my family get to him once again?" Emily wondered, considering booking a cab to take her home. She hoped that Victor was home and not out somewhere spending what little money they had left before the end of the month. "I don't see his truck here," Sam spoke up behind Emily, startling her. "Don't worry, I'll find my own way," Emily assured him. "Midgard city has had a lot of rumors lately about cab kidnappings. Do you really want to risk going home in a cab?" Sam persisted. Emily had momentarily forgotten about that possibility before deciding to book a cab. "Fine, I'll go with you. But you're not driving me inside the mansion gate," Emily declared firmly. She didn't want Victor to get the wrong idea about her relationship with Sam. Thirty minutes later, they arrived at the entrance of the Herbert family mansion. The gate keepers opened the gate upon recognizing it was Sam's car coming. Before Emily could stop him, Sam drove right into the mansion. He did it intentionally, hoping Victor would see his wife coming down from his car. "I told you not to drive inside!" Emily raised an eyebrow at Sam. "Sorry, love. The gate opened, and I thought I'd drive in to drop you off properly, maybe even say hello to Lady Herbert," Sam quickly offered excuses. "Emily quickly rushed out of the car without a word of thanks, heading towards the boys' quarters where she and her husband had been sent to live. Along the way, she noticed that her husband's truck was nowhere to be seen. Scanning the compound, she found it still absent. She returned to the gatekeepers and inquired if her husband had returned, but she only received the expected negative response given the absence of Victor's truck. "Where could he be at this time of the night? It's all my fault; I shouldn't have hidden the note from him," She blamed herself. Soon, her phone buzzed with notifications. Glancing quickly at it, she saw the headline: 'Live news: Truck accident.' "Huh!" Emily gasped and tapped on the notification to view the live news. "We're live just a few miles from Midgard city, reporting on an accident that occurred an hour ago. It was indeed tragic, as there were no survivors from the small truck," said the reporter in the live stream. Emily swallowed hard as she awaited more information. She didn't want to believe it was Victor, but the word 'truck' made her think otherwise. Her eyes grew teary. Live Stream continues. 'And now we will show you the truck. Viewers, the images you're about to see are troubling, so please viewer discretion is advised.' The first image shown on the live stream was of Victor's truck, and the license plate number was displayed prominently. Immediately upon seeing it, Emily broke down in uncontrollable tears. Her sobbing was so heavy that Sam noticed it from afar. He quickly ran to Emily and held her as she fell into his arms in tears. He didn't know the reason for her crying, but having her in his arms was far more important to him. Right at that moment, a familiar voice pierced the environment. "Stay away from my wife!" Victor screamed before passing out by the gate. Emily's eyes widened in puzzlement.
