02 - The Journey Begins

Lila' POV Leaving the village was the hardest thing I had ever done. The place I had called home for as long as I could remember was now behind me, replaced by the dense, unfamiliar forest. My heart ached with every step, the thought of never seeing the people I had grown up with, the simple life I had cherished, tearing at me. But Kael’s presence beside me was a constant reminder that I had no choice. There was no going back. As we walked, I tried to process everything he had told me. The idea that I wasn’t just human, that I was something more, something powerful, was too overwhelming to fully grasp. The visions, the strange feelings I had always experienced—they were real, and they meant something. And Kael, the mysterious man who had appeared in my dreams and now stood by my side, was somehow connected to it all. The forest around us grew denser, the trees towering above, their branches intertwining to create a canopy that blocked out most of the sunlight. The air was cooler here, the sounds of the village long behind us, replaced by the rustling of leaves and the distant calls of animals. I had never ventured this far into the forest before, and everything felt foreign, as if I had stepped into another world. Kael moved with purpose, his strides long and confident. There was a strength to him, an aura of authority that was impossible to ignore. I found myself watching him out of the corner of my eye, trying to understand this man who had so suddenly appeared in my life. He seemed so sure of everything, so certain of who I was, even when I wasn’t. “How much farther?” I asked, breaking the silence that had settled between us. “Not much farther,” Kael replied, his voice calm. “We’ll reach the edge of the forest by nightfall. From there, it’s a day’s journey to my territory.” “Your territory?” I echoed, my curiosity piqued. He nodded, glancing at me. “Yes. It’s a place where you’ll be safe, where you can learn about who you truly are. There are others like you there, others who can help you understand your power.” “Others like me?” I repeated, trying to wrap my mind around the idea. “You mean, there are more…half-breeds?” “Not exactly,” Kael said, his tone measured. “You’re unique, Lila. But there are others who share a similar heritage, who understand the balance between human and…other.” “Other?” I pressed, wanting more answers. “What am I, Kael? What is this ‘other’ part of me?” He was silent for a moment, as if considering how much to tell me. “You’re part wolf, Lila. The blood of the werewolves flows through your veins. That’s why you’ve always felt different, why you’ve experienced those visions and bursts of power. It’s the wolf inside you, awakening.” I stopped in my tracks, staring at him in disbelief. “Werewolf? You’re saying I’m part…werewolf?” “Yes,” he said simply, turning to face me fully. “It’s in your blood. Your mother was human, but your father was a powerful Alpha. That makes you a Luna, destined to lead alongside an Alpha, to be his equal in every way.” I shook my head, trying to comprehend what he was saying. It sounded impossible, like something out of a story, not real life. “I don’t understand. How can I be part werewolf? I’ve never…I mean, I don’t transform or anything.” “The transformation comes with the full awakening of your power,” Kael explained. “It hasn’t happened yet because you’ve been living as a human, unaware of your true nature. But now that you’ve begun to awaken, it’s only a matter of time. Your first transformation will be difficult, but I’ll be there to help you through it.” My mind was reeling. The idea that I was part werewolf, that I could transform into some kind of creature, was too much. But at the same time, it explained so much—the visions, the strange sensations, the feeling that I didn’t belong. “Why didn’t anyone tell me?” I asked, my voice shaky. “Why didn’t my parents tell me the truth?” Kael’s expression softened, and he stepped closer, his eyes filled with a rare gentleness. “Your mother didn’t know. She died when you were very young, didn’t she?” I nodded, a lump forming in my throat. My mother’s death had always been a painful subject for me, one that I had tried to avoid thinking about. “Your father couldn’t raise you himself,” Kael continued. “He was the Alpha of his pack, responsible for protecting his people. He made the difficult decision to leave you in the human village, where you would be safe, where you could live a normal life until the time came for you to fulfill your destiny.” Tears welled up in my eyes, and I quickly blinked them away. It was all too much—the truth about my heritage, the loss of my mother, the idea that my father had left me behind. “I don’t know if I can do this,” I whispered, my voice barely audible. “I’m not strong like you, Kael. I don’t know how to be what you’re telling me I am.” “You are strong, Lila,” Kael said firmly. “You just haven’t realized it yet. But you will. You have the blood of a Luna, and that makes you powerful beyond measure. I’m here to help you discover that strength, to help you become who you were always meant to be.” I wanted to believe him, to trust that he was right, but doubt gnawed at me. I had always been ordinary, just Lila from the village. How could I possibly be what he was describing? But there was no turning back now. The forest was closing in around us, and the village was far behind. I had made my choice, and I would have to see it through. Kael's POV Lila’s confusion and fear were palpable, but I admired her resilience. She was stronger than she realized, and it was my responsibility to help her discover that strength. The bond between us was already forming, the connection that was destined by our shared bloodline, but it was fragile, untested. As we walked, I kept my senses alert, scanning the forest for any signs of danger. The awakening of a Luna was a powerful event, one that could attract unwanted attention. There were those who would seek to take advantage of Lila’s power, to use her for their own ends, and I couldn’t allow that to happen. We reached the edge of the forest as the sun began to set, casting a warm, orange glow over the landscape. Beyond the trees, the terrain opened up into rolling hills, with a distant mountain range visible on the horizon. It was a beautiful sight, but I knew it held its own dangers. “We’ll make camp here for the night,” I said, glancing at Lila. “It’s safer to travel by day, especially now.” She nodded, though I could see the weariness in her eyes. It had been a long day, filled with revelations that would have overwhelmed anyone. She needed rest, and I needed time to think. As I gathered wood for a fire, Lila sat down on a fallen log, staring out at the distant mountains. I could tell she was deep in thought, likely trying to make sense of everything I had told her. I gave her space, knowing that she needed time to process it all. Once the fire was lit, I joined her, sitting down beside her on the log. The flames crackled and danced, casting flickering shadows on the ground. For a while, we sat in silence, the only sounds the crackling of the fire and the distant calls of night creatures. “Do you miss it?” Lila asked suddenly, her voice breaking the silence. “Miss what?” I asked, turning to look at her. “Being human,” she said softly. “Living a normal life, without all of this…power and responsibility.” I considered her question carefully before answering. “I was born into this life,” I said finally. “It’s all I’ve ever known. But there are times when I wonder what it would be like to live without the weight of leadership, without the constant need to protect and guide others. But I also know that this is who I am. It’s in my blood, just as it’s in yours.” She was quiet for a moment, her gaze fixed on the fire. “I don’t know if I can be that person,” she admitted. “I’ve always just wanted to live a simple life, to be…normal.” “You’re not normal, Lila,” I said gently. “You never have been. But that’s not a bad thing. You have a purpose, a destiny that’s greater than anything you could have imagined. And you don’t have to face it alone.” She looked at me then, her eyes filled with uncertainty. “Why are you helping me, Kael? What do you get out of this?” I met her gaze, holding it steadily. “Because it’s my duty. As the Alpha, it’s my responsibility to protect my people, to ensure their future. And you, Lila, are a crucial part of that future. Your power, your strength, they’re needed to keep the balance, to protect those who cannot protect themselves.” She searched my eyes for a moment, as if trying to find some hidden motive. But there was none. My duty to her was clear, and I would fulfill it, no matter the cost. “Thank you,”
