Jack stared at me like the moonlight had revealed a ghost. Or a monster. Or both. The forest felt too quiet after the rogue’s death. The trees held their breath. The dirt still smelled like blood under the top layer of leaves. My knife gleamed faintly before I tucked it back under my sleeve. Jack didn't blink. “Lainey,” he said. “What did you just do?” My wolf pushed against my ribs, restless, irritated, wanting to pace. I ignored her and wiped the dirt off my hands. “Gardening,” I said. “You know. Outdoor hobbies. Very relaxing.” His eyes flashed gold. "Don't lie to me.” I sighed. “Fine.
