The smell of polyester and floor wax hung heavy in the air. After an hour of being measured for graduation gowns—a stark reminder that our time here was ending—Zara and I were finally done. Levi had already bailed, disappearing with Noah the moment the bell rang. We walked to my locker, the hallway echoing with the slamming of metal doors and the chatter of freedom. I opened my locker, shoving a few stray textbooks into my bag. When I closed the door, I wasn't alone. A pair of pristine sneakers blocked my path. I looked up, past denim jeans and a grey hoodie, to see a boy with chestnut hair and bright, eager light-blue eyes.
