The bus stop bench is cold through my coat. I sit with my bag on my lap and watch my breath fog the air and tell myself I am fine, which is something I have been telling myself since I was seventeen and have never once believed. Evelyn had wrapped her scarf around my neck when she called my name. It is soft and faintly perfumed and warm in a way that has nothing to do with the temperature outside, and I should take it off.
