I did not know what time it was when I stirred, only that something felt different. The air was cooler against my face, and the space beside me no longer carried the solid presence it had during the night. For a brief, disoriented second, I forgot where I was. Then the ceiling above me came into focus, high and unfamiliar, and memory returned. I was in Adrian's bed. I turned my head slightly and saw that his side of the mattress was empty. The sheets were smooth, already cool. He had been gone long enough for the warmth to disappear. Embarrassment flushed through me as I became aware of how close I had drifted during the night.
