Chapter13

After sleeping in the guest room, Caitlyn woke up ready to face the day. She was going back to work for the first time since she'd received the news that Jeremy had been in the hospital. Paige was driving her since Brandon still had her car. He was meeting her at the office so she could drive herself home. Brandon had informed her that he had to go back out to his place and figure out what belongings he was bringing back with him along with some tools. Seeing him leave felt weird like part of her was leaving. The only other time she'd felt like this had been when Tyler and Jeremy left for deployment. She just chalked it up to emotions from the baby. Cait dropped her lunch into the break room fridge and made a big cup of cranberry tea. She'd read that herbal tea could help her transition from coffee. The baby apparently liked the taste. Dr. Patel had given her some antinausea medicine along with some multivitamins and she was surprised at how good she was feeling. Getting to her desk, Cait saw that someone had thrown files all over. She felt this had Georgette written all over it. Georgette seemed to enjoy making her life hell, so she wouldn't give her the joy of letting it stop her. Caitlyn had started organizing the mess that had been left and before she knew it, lunch time had arrived. As she left her office, Georgette ran right into her spilling scalding coffee all over her. She fought the urge to cry out. "Watch where you are going Cow. These are designer shoes."Georgette said as she skirted around the mess she'd made."And when you clean up, you owe me a cup of coffee." "Anything else while I'm at it?" Cait worked under Georgette since she'd snagged the lead paralegal position. Cait had actually done most of the work on the case that had gotten Georgette the promotion. "One of the blueberry scones would be nice," Georgette said as she passed. Caitlyn picked up the cup and headed to the janitor's closet. After having incidents with Georgette, she'd begun hiding a change of clothes. The spare outfit was where she'd left it and still fit. Putting her soiled clothes in a bag, Cait got the janitor to clean up the spilled coffee for her and headed to the break room. Once there, she grabbed her lunch from the fridge, a new coffee, and a scone for Georgette. "Oh! How thoughtful, you brought me lunch too! I'm starving." Georgette said as she entered her office. "No, the coffee and scone are for you. The box is MY lunch." "But I want it." "I don't care what you want. The box is MY lunch." Normally Cait wouldn't have put up a fight and just gave her lunch to Georgette. However, she had to think about her baby's needs as well. Not eating wouldn't be good for her blood sugar. She'd taken what Dr. Patel had said to heart and made her baby her top priority. Before she could react, Georgette grabbed the box and caused the contents to spill all over the floor. "Look at the mess you made! Now go get a broom and clean this up." "If you hadn't tried to steal my lunch, it wouldn't be on the floor. You clean it." Seeing her lunch spilled on the floor, angered Cait. "I'm your boss, you'll do as I say," Georgette said haughtily. "Uh, no. You might be my boss, but you cannot treat me this way." Cait didn't know where she'd gotten this backbone from, but she wasn't going to waste it. "Then you leave me no choice but to fire you." Georgette looked at her smugly. "Nice try but you don't have the authority to fire me." "Oh really, lots of things changed while you were gone." Georgette grabbed her office phone and began dialing. After a few rings and gruff male voice answered."What is so important to disturb me during a disposition?" "I have a paralegal being insubordinate do I have the power to fire her?" "As per the last email I sent out, you are in charge of hiring and firing of the paralegal staff. If you want to fire her then do it. Just stop bothering me!" The voice said angrily before hanging up. "Well, there is your answer. Now get out of my office and go get your things, you are no longer employed here. And since you were on a leave of absence the last two months, don't think about a severance package." "On her way to her office, two security guards joined her with a box." Cait was dumbfounded at how quickly her day had changed. As she was being led from the building, she called Tyler's mom. "Why didn't you tell me that Georgette was now in charge of the paralegals fully?" "Oh honey, we didn't want you to find out like this. We were bought out of our partnerships. Carlton Horton pulled a shady deal and we were lucky to get out without being disbarred. I was hoping to tell you before you started back. We are going to start a new firm here shortly if you want to come back for us." "Then I'm happy I got terminated. Georgette was pulling her crap again. She tried to steal my lunch after she'd spilled coffee on me." Cait had gotten in her car and was heading back to Victoria's. "That evil witch helped him steal the firm. They'll get what is coming to them. Don't let this bother you, you need to look out for yourself and the baby. Tyler told me. You know that boy can't keep secrets." "I know all too well, did he tell you about Brandon, Jeremy's brother? He bought a house so he could help look after me and the baby."Tyler's mom had always been someone she could talk with. "From the commission Victoria is getting, I'd say it's more than just a regular house. Tyler said that Brandon offered him a place there as well. It almost sounds like a party house." "What kind of partying do you think an injured vet, pregnant woman, and a mechanic are going to do?"Cait asked jokingly. "You all three are single. There is so much trouble that you can get into." Tyler's mom answered while laughing. "Brandon is calling, I better answer this. Let me know when you get the new firm started so I can apply." "I'll get the details for you. You aren't going to need to apply. I wouldn't want anyone else. Later love," Tyler's mother hung up. "What's up?" She answered Brandon. "Letting you know I made it safe." Brandon didn't want her to know he already missed the sound of her voice. "Cool...How soon until you're back?" "Hmmm...four days maybe? The guy had already started packing my house for me,but I still have to figure out what machines to bring and what staff is coming out there and what staff is staying here. I also planned to pick Tyler up on my way back." "Do you think they'll discharge him by then?" Cait hated seeing Tyler in the hospital. "At this point, I think he'll sign himself out if they don't let him out." Brandon knew that Tyler was geting antsy about being away from everyone. "Well, the trip will be a great male bonding time for the both of you." She joked. "Something like that." "Can't be worse than how my day went." "What do you mean went? It's barely 3 pm." "Yeah well, I had a run-in with Georgette. Remember the woman from the restaurant?" "The woman with her nose up in the air?" "That would be the one. It turns out that she gained some authority while I'd been gone. She fired me after spilling coffee on me and trying to steal my lunch. I refused to clean the mess up." "Wow, sounds like a busy day. Is it bad that I'm happy you aren't working with her?" "No, I'm happy to be out as well. Tyler's parents are starting a new firm and I'm already hired." "Awesome, we'll celebrate when we get back."
