Caitlyn's POV After the doctor came to check on her, Caitlyn was in shock. Of all the times they'd been intimate, they'd never forgotten protection. The night he proposed had been the only time, and it now felt like it was destined. The doctor promised to release her only if she had someone to keep an eye on her and for her to make an appointment with an OB/GYN. Thinking Jeremy's mom would be excited to hear the news, she quickly called her. " What do you want?! " Jeremy's mother screamed at her. " I just got some exciting news that I felt you would like to know. I'm having Jeremy's baby," Caitlyn wasn't going to let his mother's attitude ruin her joy. " Are you sure it's my son's? He's dead remember? " " We were together the night before he deployed. He's the only man I've ever been with. Not that it's any of your business," Caitlyn informed her indignantly. " So you say. What do you want from me? " His mother's harsh words made her realize she'd made a mistake in contacting her. " Well, the doctor won't release me unless I have someone to keep an eye on me for a few days. " " And? What does that have to do with me? Why can't your parents? " " I thought since this is Jeremy's baby, your grandchild, you'd want to be involved. I see that this is not the case. " " Yes you have. Our connection ended the day my son died. Forget this number. " She promptly hung up without another word. Well, that didn't go as planned, she thought. The only other person she felt comfortable confiding in was still recovering in a hospital himself. As she sat there trying to come up with who she could contact, Brandon came into her room unannounced. " Don't you know how to knock? " She spat angrily. " The door was ajar. How are you feeling today? " Brandon pulled out a beautiful bouquet of yellow roses in a vase. "I saw these in the gift shop and felt that you needed something cheerful in here," " Thank you. I'm sorry for being snappy. It's been a stressful morning, " Caitlyn replied. The roses made her feel special. " If it has anything to do with my mother, I can understand. I heard the tail end of your conversation. " Brandon didn't show any remorse for easedropping on her phone call with his mother. " How much did you hear? " Caitlyn asked nervously. Before Brandon could answer, two burly men came into the room unannounced. " Caitlyn Sanson? We are here to discuss the debt your fiancé had with our boss." One of the men stated without looking at Brandon. " Who do you represent? I've already talked to all the credit companies. " Caitlyn didn't think that there could have been more she didn't know. When she'd found out about all the debt on the credit cards she'd never known about, she had crawled into bed and cried for days. " Honey we aren't the ones who report to the credit bureau. If you catch my drift. " " No, I don't. He's gone, so I don't know why you are bothering me. " She said indignantly. " Can't you see she's recovering? What is your boss's name? " Brandon yelled at the men. They just noticed he was in the room. " We don't care about her health. We just want to know when we can expect payment. Our boss's name is of no concern to you pal. " " It most certainly is. She needs her rest and you can tell your boss that his debt ended with Jeremy's death." Brandon walked menacingly up to the two men and pointed to the door. Faster than she'd ever seen someone move, Brandon grabbed the fist of the guy who decided to throw a punch at him. " Will you be a doll and call for security to take these assholes out?" Brandon asked her. " No need, We'll leave peacefully. Don't think that this is over lady. " Said the one who didn't throw the punch. " No, I don't think you got the message. She is off limits no matter where she is at. " Brandon glared fiercely back. " We'll see about that. You have no power over her. " The other said as they were leaving. " I don't need power over her. I'm just protecting her from the likes of you. " The two men left quickly. After they'd left, Brandon asked her if she was okay. She nodded her head, wondering what Jeremy had gotten her into. Subconsciously, she placed a hand on her growing baby. " Do you know who their boss is?" " Not yet. I bet he got involved with them when he couldn't get another credit card. I came to see if you were ready to get discharged and go to the will reading this afternoon. Tyler is waiting downstairs in the car. He waited in the car since he isn't good with the crutches. " Brandon told her. " That's the thing, they won't let me leave unless I have someone to watch over me. " Caitlyn said dejectedly. " Let me guess, I heard you asking my mother and she said no. " " Yeah, with Jeremy being gone and Tyler still recovering, I don't have anyone else that I feel comfortable calling on. " She started crying. " Wow, I feel like chopped liver right now. Didn't I notice you not feeling so well at the funeral? Even though my brother and I weren't close, I still feel like he'd want me to keep you safe for him. " Brandon told her. " You'd do that for me? A complete stranger? " Caitlyn didn't know what to think. He was practically a stranger yet he was showing her so much compassion. " I wouldn't want to interfere with your life. " She said meekly. " Sweetheart, most of my work is in the design and components of a motorcycle. I let the young ones build it. If I'm doing a paint job, I can rent a place nearby to do it. Besides, I'm between jobs. " Brandon didn't think she needed to know that he had three builds on deck to be completed. Tony could work out the kinks on those. " I wouldn't have offered if I didn't want to do it. Now quit stalling. Do you want out of here or not? " " Of course I do. " She wasn't going to fight him about this anymore. " Then don't complain. Get the doctor to come give us the rules for getting you discharged." Caitlyn quickly hit the call button to let the nurse know she was ready to leave. While they were waiting, Brandon called the law office to let them know they'd been delayed and would be arriving shortly. Apparently, his mother was already there and complaining about the wait. She'll be in shock when she finds out what her son did, Brandon thought. Brandon felt sad for his lost brother. Once the nurse came in and went over the discharge information, Brandon kept a poker face when she mentioned the pregnancy. As soon as they were alone again. Brandon grinned at her and said," Looks like my brother left a lasting memory." " I feel like it's the ultimate gift he could have given me." " I couldn't agree more. I plan to be an active part of my niece or nephew's life. If that's not a problem. " Brandon wanted to curse his brother for the mess he left her in.
