The party had finally ended. The laughter, the music, the clinking of glasses ,all dissolved into the soft quiet of the estate. My father, Harlan, had retreated to his study, shoulders heavy, face drawn. Confusion clouded his gaze, frustration mingling with a hint of sadness. Aris hovered nearby, her voice ready to explain, but there was no space, no patience for her theatrics.
Abi flopped onto the sofa beside me, hair spilling over her shoulder, her eyes still wide from the evening’s excitement. “Meelan… you’re thinking about him again, aren’t you?” she asked softly, nudging my arm.
I sighed. “I can’t stop. Even now… I’m just thinking of Alaiz, and… the masked man. I don’t even know who he is, but…” My voice trailed off. The memory of that night, the way he had saved me without hesitation, without words, still sent shivers through me.
Abi’s eyes softened. “You need to let someone in,” she said quietly, almost pleading. “You can’t carry this alone. Not everything.”
I nodded, though I wasn’t ready to admit it. The ache of their absence lingered, making the warmth of the party and the laughter of our friends feel hollow.
Dinner that evening was quieter than the party. Just a small family gathering, Harlan and Aris trying to navigate the tension of yesterday, and Alfreen, the Italian man with the impeccable charm, was invited by my father. He moved with effortless grace, elegance radiating from every gesture. Abi’s eyes, however, couldn’t leave him. She followed his every motion, the tilt of his head, the polite smile he offered, the way his hands brushed lightly against the wine glass.
I watched her, a soft smile on my lips. She was beautiful, youthful, unguarded in ways I envied. Yet even as she admired Alfreen, my thoughts drifted elsewhere, back to Alaiz, to the masked man, to every shadowed moment where safety and fear intertwined.
Alfreen, noticing Abi’s gaze, felt a stir of curiosity and subtle admiration. She was striking, unassuming, and… present in a way that made him pause. He excused himself, intending to leave the room for a moment of quiet, when Aris appeared in the passageway.
She moved deliberately, almost predatory. She brushed past him, intentionally close, her perfume catching his senses. “Don’t go yet,” she whispered softly, her voice low and charged with a dangerous promise.
Before he could respond, she shifted her body closer. Her hands grazed him lightly, her posture intimate. Her bust pressed subtly against his arm, deliberate and knowing. Her voice dropped even lower, sultry and persuasive. “You know I’d do anything… anything for you. Just don’t… let anyone know yet .”
Alfreen froze, a flicker of hesitation crossing his features. His hands tightened slightly at his sides, the tension evident, and his breath hitched almost imperceptibly. The power Aris wielded wasn’t physical.it was raw, intoxicating, and utterly manipulative. She let her hands trail over him, testing boundaries, teasing and claiming him .
Abi, from across the room, caught the interaction in the corner of her eye. Her lips parted slightly, eyes widening, heart racing. She had admired Alfreen all evening, and now she saw him being subtly ensnared by Aris’s dangerous charm.
Meanwhile, my mind was elsewhere. My pulse thudded for reasons I couldn’t name. Alaiz’s absence, the masked man who saved me, and the intimate tension before me combined into a cocktail of emotions that left me shaky and restless. I sat quietly, pretending to focus on the plate in front of me, though my thoughts refused to obey.
Aris leaned closer, brushing Alfreen’s arm once more, whispering words I couldn’t hear but imagined fully. Her bust brushed against him just enough, and he responded subtly, just a flicker, a tension in his hands, a quick inhale. His body betrayed him, betraying the control he tried to maintain.
Abi finally moved, whispering to me, “Meelan… look at her. Look at what she’s doing.”
I clenched my fingers into my lap, unsure whether to intervene or step away. The sight twisted something inside me .it was envy, confusion, fear, and the creeping realization of how dangerously a person could manipulate desire.
Alfreen’s eyes met hers, sharp, conflicted. There was curiosity, temptation, and the subtle restraint of a man who knew lines should not be crossed but desire is persistent. He brushed a hand lightly across her back in a way that was polite to the world but intimate in private. Aris’s smile widened; her victory, unspoken, burned quietly in the tension between them.
My father’s voice broke the moment briefly, calling out a mundane question about the soup, his eyes unaware of the storm brewing behind his back. Aris pulled back slightly, still close enough to leave a trace of her scent and heat in Alfreen’s awareness.
Abi leaned toward me again, whispering, “I… I think .....”
I shook my head softly, feeling both amusement and exasperation. She had no idea the complex web she had stepped into .
Aris’s gaze lingered on Alfreen one last time, her lips curling with intent. He swallowed hard, awareness and desire warring in his eyes. Then she stepped so close ,close enough to get a kiss but mistakenly her hand hit the flower case behind her .It fell and broke causing a scene exactly where they were .
The room felt heavier , thick with unspoken truths, desire, and fear. Dad got lost immediately he saw them, his spoon feel off his hand in schock .Abi blushed furiously, and Alfreen adjusted his jacket, clearing his throat as if to regain composure.
