Chapter 8: Getting Closer

1218 Words
The police bring the man in, give him a slap, and say, "Trying to run away, are we? And yet you claim you didn't do anything!" The man pleads again, "Sir, I honestly didn't do anything. Please let me go, Sir." The officer asks angrily, "If you didn't do anything, why were you running away? And tell me, how did this bag and phone end up in your room?" The police slap the man once more. In a fit of rage, Aryan grabs the man by his collar and demands, "Tell me, where have you hidden Mimi?" Mimi's father restrains Aryan and pulls him away from the man. Weeping with folded hands, the man says, "Sir, I don't know anyone named Mimi." Hearing this, Aryan is about to strike the man again, but the police stop him. "Sir, please calm down a bit," the police officer says. The police question the man again, "If you don't know anyone named Mimi, then how did her bag and phone get into your room?" With a tear-choked voice, the man replies, "Sir, I am a very poor man now. I found this bag and phone lying on the street, Sir. Please believe me." The police ask him, "Where exactly did you find this bag and phone?" The man answers, "Sir, just a little further down from the taxi stand ahead, you will find that spot." The police say, "Alright, we take your word for it. Now, come with us." "Where to, Sir?" the man asks. "Come and show us exactly where that place is." "Alright, Sir, please come with me." After that, everyone, including the man, gets into the car. They set off to reach that location. Meanwhile, Mimi wakes up and sees that Nidhi is still asleep. So, Mimi goes to the bathroom to take a shower. On the other hand, Mahir also wakes up and comes straight to his room to get ready, as he has to go to the office. Entering his room, Mahir first kisses the sleeping Nidhi on her forehead. Then, he gathers all his necessary belongings. Right after that, with sleepy eyes, he starts walking toward the bathroom of his room. Mahir has no idea that Mimi is inside taking a shower. Meanwhile, Mimi finishes her shower and is stepping out just as Mahir is about to enter. The two bump into each other right at the bathroom door. Seeing Mimi slip, Mahir catches her—in true cinematic style. Just like a hero catches the heroine in movies when she falls, Mahir holds her and keeps staring at Mimi like a hero. Mimi’s wet hair seems to attract Mahir. Mimi and Mahir stand there, staring into each other's eyes, completely oblivious to their surroundings. It is as if both have lost themselves in some dream world. Their dream is shattered by Nidhi's voice. By then, Nidhi has woken up. Nidhi asks, "Mammum, Papa, why are you two standing like this?" Hearing Nidhi's voice, both feel embarrassed, quickly straighten up, and stand facing opposite directions. Mimi turns toward Nidhi, while Mahir turns toward the bathroom. Mimi thinks to herself, 'Have I fallen in love with Mahir Babu?' Thinking about this, a smile creeps onto her face unconsciously. On the other side, Mahir thinks to himself, 'Am I falling for Anu all over again?' Interrupting their thoughts, Nidhi speaks up again, "What happened, Papa, Mammum? Why aren't you saying anything?" Then, Mahir goes into the bathroom, and Mimi goes over to Nidhi. Mimi says to Nidhi, "It’s nothing, sweetie. Go and freshen up. I'll get breakfast ready." "Okay, Mammum," Nidhi replies. Then, Nidhi goes to freshen up. On the other side, the police arrive at the spot with the man where he had found Mimi's bag and phone. The police ask the man, "Is it exactly this spot? Do you remember correctly?" The man replies, "Sir, I remember clearly. I found the bag and phone right here." The police say, "Alright, you may go now." Meanwhile, Mimi prepares breakfast for Nidhi and Mahir. After a while, Mahir and Nidhi come out of the room together, holding hands. Mimi serves breakfast to both of them. Mimi thinks, 'Mahir Babu looks somewhat different today. There is no sign of anger or irritation on his face.' Nidhi hasn't finished eating yet. Mahir quickly finishes his food, takes his car keys, holds his blazer in his hand, and prepares to leave. Just then, Mimi speaks up, "Mahir Babu, please come home a bit early this evening." In a deep voice, Mahir asks, "Why?" "No, I mean... just like that." Without giving any answer, Mahir leaves. On the other side, the police are showing Mimi's photograph to everyone in the area, asking if anyone has seen her. Mimi's father and Aryan are also showing her picture and asking around. But no one can tell them anything. The police stop a man and ask, "Excuse me, brother, listen." The man stops and asks, "What happened, Sir?" Showing Mimi's picture, the police ask, "Did you see this girl here a few days ago?" After looking at the picture for a while, the man says, "Yes, Sir, I remember now. I saw this girl here a few days ago. She was running and even bumped into me. I asked her what was wrong, but she didn't answer and ran ahead." "Thank you," the police officer says. The man then leaves. Aryan says, "She must have been in some trouble, which is why she was running for help." Mimi's father adds, "Yes, that must be it. Who knows where my daughter is and what condition she is in right now!" Saying this, Mimi's father bursts into tears. Aryan comforts Mimi's father and consoles him. Meanwhile, the police also reassure him that they will definitely find his daughter safe and sound. The police move a bit further along the path Mimi had run and continue their investigation. Even after asking many people, they don't find out much. While searching for Mimi, the afternoon fades into evening. Finally, spotting a betel leaf (paan) shop, the police head toward it to question the shopkeeper. The police officer asked the shopkeeper, "Excuse me, brother, listen." The shopkeeper quickly replied, "Yes, Sir, tell me. What kind of paan (betel leaf) do you need?" "No, no, we don't need any paan. Look at this photo. Have you seen this girl anywhere around here a few days ago?" the police officer asked. The shopkeeper said, "I did see a girl like this around here a few days ago, but I can't say for sure if it is this exact girl, Sir." "Alright, which direction was she going?" "She got into a car right here." Aryan asked with curiosity, "A car??" The shopkeeper replied, "Yes, Sir. I saw the girl in this photo get into a car." "Alright, do you remember the car's license plate number?" the police officer inquired. The man replied, "No, Sir. So many cars pass by this way every day. Is it really possible to remember the numbers of all of them?" "Well, can you tell us what color or what kind of car it was?" the police officer asked. The man said, "Yes, Sir. It was a big, white-colored car." "Alright." Aryan wondered, "Whose car could that be??"
