The sound of whistles and trumpets blowing from the surrounding jungle announced the start of the ground attack. Hoards of enemy soldiers advanced on the firebase from three different directions. In a wild-eyed frenzy and screaming insanely, they ascended the hill toward the firebase, weapons firing on full automatic. Charlie Company defenders did all they could to slow down the onslaught of feverish attackers. Some claymore mines still worked and quickly blew as the scourge continued pushing forward through the pathways in the wire.
