X Machina Bellica ‘War Machine’ The emperor drove his legions on at a relentless pace. Three legions, the Praetorian Guard, and thousands of auxiliary troops from across the Empire tramped across the landscape of northern Britannia. In the wake of this invasion army, near to a legion of supply wagons, merchants, and camp followers clung to the great lumbering beast like parasites or symbionts, depending on their need or role. From distant rocky crags, in faraway eyries, rebel britons of the Selgovae, Maeatae, and the Caledonii watched and waited as the men of Rome repaired their overgrown roads, chopped down Britannia's forests, levelled her heights, bridged rivers, and filled her swamps.
