Epilogus The journey south filled the Metelli and their companions with optimism as they travelled toward their new life. It didn’t matter that it might all be fleeting. Lucius had come to realize that nothing lasted forever, and so, rather than let that thought consume him, he made a conscious effort to seize every opportunity the Gods put before him now. He knew he owed that and much more to the family he had come so close to losing as he groped in the darkness of war in Caledonia. As he flicked the reins of their wagon team, he looked ahead to a blue sky that stretched from one end of the horizon to the other, felt the heat of Apollo’s sun on his face, and revelled in the laughter of his wife and daughter as they took their turn exercising their mounts along the side of the road.
