Marked by Power, Not Love

383 Words
Pearl I didn’t expect Ezra to back me up in front of the council. But I didn’t trust him for it either. Words were easy. Men knew how to perform loyalty. I needed action. So when he showed up at my quarters that night — shirt clinging to his body, eyes stormy — I didn’t flinch. “You shouldn’t be here,” I said. “And yet I am.” He closed the door behind him. My back straightened. “You didn’t come for talk, did you?” “No,” he breathed. “I came because I needed to see you.” I turned slowly. My pulse betrayed me — fast and wild. “You saw me. You left me.” His jaw clenched. He took two steps closer. “I was a coward.” Another step. “I thought pushing you away would protect you.” Closer. “But watching you lead, watching you walk into war without blinking… Pearl, you’re the fire I’ll burn for.” I stood there, breathless, throat tight. He reached for me, but I caught his wrist. “You don’t get to mark me again just because I glow now.” His hand dropped. But his eyes didn’t waver. “Then let me earn the right.” “How?” “Let me guard your door. Let me fight beside you, not in front. Let me worship the very soul I once feared.” Silence. Heavy. Thick. Electric. And still… I didn’t pull away when his lips brushed my neck. He didn’t kiss me. He bowed. His breath warmed my skin like a prayer. “I don’t need your love,” I whispered, heart twisting, “I need your loyalty.” “You’ll have both,” he said. “But the second you ask me to leave… I will.” I closed my eyes. And for the first time in a long time, I felt safe—not because of the man in my room. But because of the woman I’d become. River I smelled him on her skin before I even knocked. So I didn’t. I turned away from her door. Not because I gave up. But because I needed to remind her that I wasn’t going to chase. I was going to conquer.
