Pearl stood at the center of the training grounds, her skin prickling under the heat of dozens of stares. The warriors circled the perimeter, pretending to spar, but their attention was fixed on her. On them.
Ezra Black.
Alpha. Untouchable. And hers — if only by contract.
He stalked forward in a fitted black shirt that clung to his muscles like it was tailored just for sin. The air around him crackled with dominance. His wolf was close — too close — and it made Pearl’s body respond in ways she hated. Her knees felt weak. Her breath shallowed.
But she didn’t flinch.
"Pearl," he said, his voice cool and controlled. "Step forward."
She didn’t move.
He narrowed his eyes, a low growl vibrating from his chest. "That wasn’t a suggestion."
Gasps echoed from the crowd. Even the wind seemed to pause.
Pearl clenched her fists. She hadn’t been called out like this since the day he marked her in front of everyone — the day she stopped being invisible.
"What is this?" she asked, lifting her chin. “Trying to remind everyone who the Alpha is?”
Ezra’s lips curved into a slow, dangerous smile. "I don’t need to remind anyone. But you—you seem to have forgotten your place."
“My place?” She took a step toward him. “You mean as your fake Luna? Or the mate you rejected?”
The air sizzled with tension. Somewhere, someone whispered her name like a warning.
Ezra’s wolf surged to the surface, his eyes flashing gold. "You’re mine, Pearl. Contract or not. And it's time everyone sees it.”
Before she could react, he closed the distance between them and pulled her to him — not gently. His hand went around her waist like a steel band, his scent flooding her senses. Cedar. Smoke. Alpha.
Her breath caught. Her wolf whimpered — confused, wanting.
“You don’t get to ignore my orders,” he growled low in her ear, “not in front of my pack.”
Pearl’s heart pounded so loudly she was sure the warriors heard it. Her body betrayed her — leaning into him slightly, eyes fluttering.
She hated him.
She wanted him.
“Let. Me. Go.” Her voice was steel, but her lips trembled.
Ezra didn’t move. “Say you understand your role. Say it.”
“No.” Her fingers curled into fists. “You lost that right the day you gave me up.”
And then—another voice broke the storm.
“That’s enough.”
The crowd parted.
River.
His eyes burned like frostfire, his presence calm and dangerous. He looked at Ezra like he was ready to kill him — again. He wasn’t a boy anymore. He was a rival Alpha. And right now, he was hers.
Ezra’s jaw tightened. Slowly, he released Pearl. She stumbled back, shaken, but not broken.
River stepped in front of her. Protective. Solid. A silent promise in the way he stood.
Pearl’s head spun. Her heart ached. The wolves in her life were drawing lines in blood. But none of them had asked what she wanted.
The pack watched in silence, sensing the shift in the air — something ancient. Something dangerous.
Two Alphas.
One Luna.
And a decision that could burn the whole pack down.
