Touch Me and Mean It

Pearl His hand brushed mine again. That fake public smile, that smug alpha posture — all of it disappeared the second we were alone in the hallway. He pushed open a door, practically dragging me inside the private study and slamming it shut behind us. I didn’t flinch. I dared him with my silence. “Are you trying to embarrass me in front of the whole damn pack?” Ezra growled, stepping in too close again. I backed into the desk, palms flat against the polished wood. “You kissed me in front of them without asking. You marked me. If anyone should be embarrassed, it’s you.” His eyes burned into me. “Don’t act like you didn’t feel it.” “I did,” I said, breath catching. “And that’s the problem.” Silence. Then in one smooth move, he caged me between his arms — both hands flat on the desk on either side of my hips. His scent flooded my nose again. That mix of forest, leather, and something hot and male that made my knees want to betray me. “Tell me to back off,” he whispered, lips inches from mine. I didn’t. I should have. But instead, I lifted my chin. “Touch me again, and mean it this time.” That was all it took. He crushed his mouth to mine, and gods — the world tilted. It wasn’t gentle. It was raw, hot, full of years of pain and want and memories we never got to live. My fingers gripped his collar, pulling him closer, hating that I wanted this and still didn’t trust him. He lifted me onto the desk like I weighed nothing. “You have no idea how many nights I thought about this,” he growled against my skin. I shivered. But just when his hands slipped beneath the hem of my dress, I pushed hard against his chest. “Don’t confuse lust with love, Ezra,” I whispered. “You left me. And I don’t give myself away twice.” His breathing was ragged. His eyes wild. “Then what the hell do you call this?” “War,” I said, sliding off the desk. “And I fight dirty.” I left him standing there, lips swollen, eyes blazing, and my scent all over him. Let him burn.
