CHAPTER 6: YOU REMIND ME OF HER

1270 Words
AUTHOR’S POV Lara stood tucked into the corner of the hallway, watching Tristan barge out of the Old Madam’s suite, with his jaw clenched in pure fury and her heart hammered against her ribs. ‘If Tristan had an inkling that was Emilia, then something was definitely wrong somewhere’. Although Dr. Winston bore a terrifying resemblance to Emilia, Lara was sure Emilia was long dead. Although she couldn’t confirm it herself, the Ashfords did five years ago, and they couldn’t have been mistaken. ‘Is it possible Tristan was still thinking of Emilia? But it’s been five years, and besides, he never liked her, so why would he suddenly care about a dead person? Is that why he barely paid attention to me?’ Lara thought aloud while biting her fingers anxiously. A shadow fell over her face as she suddenly thought of something. There was no way that person could have messed up. She turned on her heels, her fingers frantically dialing a long-forgotten number on her phone. EMILIA’S POV A week passed in a blur of medical files and lab results, and by now I had studied and analyzed Vivian’s medical record inside out and had started my research. I already knew where the problem lay, and as it turned out, I might have to do a high-risk open-heart reconstruction soon. Although it was quite risky given the Madam’s age, most surgeons wouldn’t dare touch her, but I was confident in my skills and my team. But the real problem was communicating the surgical plan to Tristan. I hadn't come across him these past few days. Although it felt peaceful, it kept me on my toes, wondering if I would accidentally stumble upon him. Something I was not looking forward to. As usual, I left my team to watch the old woman, they usually take turns watching her, so I knew the old madam was in safe hands. I stepped out into the Blackwells’ estate main driveway, looking to catch a cab back to my hotel. Before I could take five steps, a Rolls Royce pulled up right in front of me, Luke stepped out of the front passenger seat and opened the back door, motioning for me to enter “Dr. Winston, President Blackwell wants to have a word with you.” My heart pounded against my chest as I thought of a 100 reasons why Tristan wanted to see me. I glanced into the dimly lit backseat and saw him, leaning back, concentrated on his tablet, probably going through a file or report of some sort, and the thought of being in the same enclosed space as him again scared the hell out of me, but I had to tough it up so he wouldn’t suspect a thing. I swallowed hard and stepped into the car. “President Blackwell,” I said in greeting, but he only gave a slight dismissive nod, his eyes still on the tab, not saying a word, which was weird cause Luke said he wanted to speak to me. I heard the engine come to life, and the car started to run along the driveway, and my hands clenched into tight fists, terrified. Where were they taking me to? As if sensing my worries, Luke clarified, “We are dropping you off at your hotel, Dr Winston. President Blackwell felt it was best to discuss the treatment plan on the way.” I breathed a sigh of relief, knowing he was taking me to the hotel, but I stayed on high alert. It was Tristan we were talking about A quiet click echoed through the car as Tristan pressed a button. The leather partition was put up, sealing us from Luke and the driver in front. The air in the back became suffocatingly thin, and my palms began to sweat “Relax!” I heard him say, and my head instantly turned to face him. “You are only tensed cause you’ve got so many secrets… isn’t that right, Dr. Emilia Winston?” My pulse spiked so violently I felt it in my throat. He had looked into my international background files. “I prefer to be addressed simply as Dr. Winston,” I said, keeping my voice level, pure ice. When I had just been made known to the public in Saint City at that time, the media were looking too closely into my details, and there was little I could release considering my background and the fact that the people who knew me thought I was dead. So I only went by the name Dr. Winston, and any other information was blocked from the public with the help of my mentor and savior, Dr. Alexander Winston. But Tristan had discovered my first name, which only my mentor knew who knows what else he had found out. I had to tread carefully around Tristan from this moment forth. “Is it a coincidence that you bear the same first name as my late wife?” he turned off his tab and faced me. His hazel eyes locked onto mine like a predator “Isn’t it deliberate that you always bring up your late wife when you are with me?” “You remind me of her, I can’t help it” “I will only tolerate a professional relationship between us, President Blackwell. I find it offensive how you always liken me to her” “I will wait until you can’t keep up with this act no more, Emilia. Until then, have your fun while it lasts.” Tristan let out a low, dark chuckle, sending a chill down my spine “I can’t wait to prove you wrong, President Blackwell” “You should know by now,” he whispered, leaning so close I could smell the sharp woodsmoke of his cologne. “Nothing stays hidden from me for long. When I finally find it out, you will regret why you dare lie to me” Yes, I was fully aware of his capabilities and how ruthless he was. How would I forget the very reason that got me into this mess? I knew what I was getting into coming back to this city, and now I just can’t wait to be done and leave with my children. Speaking of my children, it was time for them to get out of preschool, and they would be on their way back with the nanny I got for them. Hopefully they are in the suite already, I can’t risk Tristan coming across them. That will complicate matters. The car pulled up at the entrance of the hotel I was currently staying at. “The Blackwell owns several five-star resorts in Axel City? Why stay here?” I deliberately didn’t stay in a hotel owned by the Blackwells or the Ashfords, knowing Tristan would definitely have people monitoring me, and I can’t have that. “I don’t accept favors from my patients. Only payments” “Suit yourself.” I hurriedly came down from the car, eager to put a distance between us, and surprisingly Tristan came down too, buttoning his suit jacket “President Blackwell, you don’t need to escort me in?” I surreptitiously looked around the lobby to make sure the coast was clear “You flatter yourself. I have a private meeting here.” That was quite suspicious, but I had to buy it, it was unusual for him to go to hotels for business after what had happened last time. Guess something had changed. “Mummy!” My eyes widened at the sound of the familiar voice
