Masirah, Oman, 1980Omanis a large Sultanate found in the south-east corner of the Arabian land mass. It is bordered to the south by the Indian Ocean and to the east by the Persian Gulf. Masirah is an island approximately ten miles wide and forty miles long, off the eastern coast of the country. It is an arid place, low lying and rocky in the interior and fringed by vast empty white sandy beaches. It is almost deserted, the few people who do live there congregating around the town of Ras Hilf. This is the embarkation point for the daily ferry to the mainland. There are two main activities on the island, the oldest of which is fishing.
