Chapter Four: The Pull Beneath the Skin

676 Words
Kael didn’t sleep. He stood in his chambers, unmoving, as the night stretched on around him. Quiet. Controlled. Perfect. But beneath his skin— Something wasn’t. His sleeve was rolled up, revealing the mark. It pulsed faintly. Like a heartbeat that didn’t belong to him. Kael’s jaw tightened. He stared at it. Expression unreadable. But inside— Something churned. Low. Restless. Wrong. “This is impossible,” he muttered. The mark had never reacted like this. Never responded. Never woken. Until her. Lyra Vale. The girl with no voice. No rank. No strength. No reason to matter. And yet— His body responded to her. That alone was unacceptable. --- Outside his chambers, Ronan waited. “Alpha.” Kael didn’t turn. “What is it.” Ronan hesitated. “That girl… the one you brought in.” Silence. Kael’s eyes darkened slightly. “What about her.” Ronan exhaled. “She’s… strange.” Kael’s gaze sharpened. “In what way.” “She doesn’t act like she belongs anywhere. But—” Ronan paused. “—she doesn’t act afraid of you either.” That caught his attention. Kael turned slowly. “Everyone fears me.” Ronan shook his head. “Not her.” Silence stretched. Kael studied him. Then turned away. “That will change.” --- Meanwhile— Lyra sat on the floor of the small structure. Her knees drawn to her chest. Her fingers rested lightly against her arm. Where she had touched him. The feeling hadn’t gone away. It lingered. Soft. Warm. Unfamiliar. She frowned slightly. Her head tilted. She didn’t understand it. But she felt it. Like something had answered her. And now— Something inside her was awake. --- She stood slowly. And walked to the door. Paused. Then stepped outside. --- The night greeted her. Dark. Quiet. Watchful. Lyra moved carefully through the territory. Her steps were light. Almost silent. But the land felt different now. It responded to her. Subtly. Barely noticeable. But real. She followed the pull. It led her forward. Deeper into the territory. Toward something she didn’t understand. --- Kael felt it. Immediately. His head lifted. His body went still. “…No,” he muttered. That presence. Faint. But growing. Lyra. He moved before he thought. Exiting his chambers. Walking fast. Then faster. --- The moment he stepped outside— He saw her. Walking. Deeper into the territory. Not hiding. Not stopping. Not afraid. Kael’s expression darkened. “Stop.” The word cut through the air. Sharp. Commanding. Lyra froze. Slowly— She turned. Their eyes met. Again. That pull surged. Stronger this time. Unmistakable. Kael felt it hit his chest. Hard. His control wavered. Just for a second. Lyra’s gaze softened slightly. Curious. Not fearful. That alone was dangerous. Kael’s voice dropped. Low. Warning. “You are not allowed to wander.” Lyra tilted her head. As if listening to something only she could hear. Then— She took a step toward him. Kael’s eyes narrowed instantly. “Do not come closer.” She stopped. But didn’t step back. Instead— She raised her hand again. Slow. Careful. Kael’s body tensed. “Don’t—” Too late. Her fingers brushed his arm. Again. The reaction was immediate. The mark flared. Pain shot through him. Sharp. Sudden. Kael’s breath hitched. And this time— It wasn’t just pain. It was something else. Something deeper. A pull. A connection. His wolf surged forward. Strong. Demanding. Recognizing. Kael’s control cracked. His hand snapped out— Gripping her wrist. Hard. Lyra didn’t flinch. Didn’t pull away. She just looked at him. Calm. Close. Too close. Kael’s grip tightened. His breathing slowed. Eyes locked onto hers. Something dangerous passed between them. Unspoken. Uncontrolled. “…What are you?” he whispered. Lyra didn’t answer. She couldn’t. But her fingers trembled in his grip. And for the first time— Kael felt something he had never allowed himself to feel. Not fear. Not anger. Something worse. --- Recognition. --- And somewhere deep beneath his control— Something had already chosen. ---
