CHAPTER 6

1127 Words
Chloe sat on her kitchen island, cradling a mug of coffee that had long gone cold. Her laptop was open, but instead of reviewing site plans, she was staring at her phone screen with a deep, weary sigh. She opened her messaging app, typed out a message, deleted it, and started over three times before finally settling on something dignified: Chloe: Hi Julian. I am, so deeply sorry for the absolute disaster last night. The man who interrupted our dinner was... an old acquaintance with severe boundary issues. It was completely unacceptable, and I sincerely apologize for putting you in that position. You were a wonderful date, and I wish you all the best here in the city. She hit send, letting out a breath. She felt like she’d been holding since 8:15 PM yesterday. Before she could even set her phone down, the electronic keypad on her front door chimed with a rapid, familiar code sequence. The lock clicked, the heavy oak door swung open, and Carina Vance stepped into the foyer. She didn't take off her coat. She didn't drop her purse. She simply stood in the entryway, her arms crossed, looking at Chloe with an expression that was one part furious mother and two parts intensely fascinated gossip. "Julian called his aunt this morning," Carina announced, her tone ringing through the quiet apartment like a gavel. "Who then called Evelyn. Who then called me." Chloe rubbed her temples, leaning back against the barstool. "Mom—" "A scene, Chloe?!" Carina stepped into the living room, her heels clicking loudly against the hardwood. "Julian said a dark-haired man in an unbuttoned suit practically declared war over the bread basket and dragged you out of Le Petit Bistro!" "He didn't drag me out," Chloe corrected quietly. "I left on my own terms." "Because Marky showed up!" Carina stopped in front of the island, her eyes widening. "Evelyn said. Mark walked into his house at midnight, threw his jacket on the sofa, and refused to answer a single question except to say, 'Chloe's fine, stop asking.' What on earth happened last night?!" "He acted like a lunatic, Mom," Chloe said, her voice rising slightly despite her efforts to stay composed. "He tracked down where I was, stormed into the restaurant, and made a massive spectacle because he couldn't handle me being on a date with someone else!" Carina stared at her daughter for three long seconds. The anger on her face slowly evaporated, replaced by a sharp, knowing tilt of her head. "He was jealous," Carina said softly, a tiny, triumphant smile breaking through her serious expression. "Mark Angelo Martinez drove across town, walked into a French bistro, and humiliated himself in front of a pediatric surgeon... because he was jealous." "Mom, don't romanticize the toxic male ego—" "Toxic?" Carina scoffed gently, pouring herself a cup of water from the filter pitch on the counter. "Chloe, that boy hadn't looked at another girl since he was seventeen years old, and you know it. Evelyn told me he hadn't brought a single woman home in ten years. Not one." Chloe’s chest tightened, the room suddenly feeling a little too small. "That's just because he's a workaholic." "And what are you?" Carina countered, setting the glass down and looking at Chloe with fierce, maternal tenderness. "You two burned each other to the ground when you were kids because neither of you knew how to yield. But he showed up last night, Chloe. He stopped playing it safe." Carina walked over, wrapping her hands around Chloe's cold coffee mug and pulling it gently from her grip. "So the real question isn't why Mark showed up," Carina whispered, leaning down to look her daughter straight in the eyes. "The question is: why did you walk out of that restaurant with him, instead of staying at the table with Julian?" Chloe opened her mouth to shoot back a logical, sharp defense, but no words came out. She just stared at her mother, her pulse quickening as the quiet truth settled heavy in her chest. "I didn't walk out with him, Mom," Chloe said, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp, defensive edge as she pulled her hands back from the coffee mug. Carina blinked, caught slightly off guard by the sudden fire in her daughter's tone. "What?" "I didn't walk out with him," Chloe repeated, standing up from the barstool so fast it scraped against the hardwood. She crossed her arms, pacing two steps toward her floor-to-ceiling windows. "I paid my half of the bill, apologized to Julian like a rational adult, and swept past Mark straight out the front door. I caught a cab by myself, went home by myself, and went to bed by myself." Carina turned slowly, her eyes tracking Chloe's restless movements. "And Mark?" "Stood on the sidewalk looking like an absolute lunatic while my taxi pulled away," Chloe spat, though her pulse betrayed her, hammering violently against her ribs. "I told him that if he touched my cab door, I'd file a restraining order. He didn't follow me here, Mom. I made sure of it." Carina let out a long, quiet breath, leaning her lower back against the edge of the kitchen island. She didn't look angry anymore—just deeply thoughtful, her sharp eyes searching for Chloe's tense profile. "You left him standing in the rain," Carina murmured softly. "I left him where he belonged—outside my personal life," Chloe shot back, her jaw tightening. "He thinks he can just show up after a decade, bark orders, throw a temper tantrum in a public restaurant, and expect me to fall right back into his orbit. Well, I'm not nineteen anymore, Mom. I built a career, a firm, and a life without him. He doesn't get to command my time." "Chloe..." Carina started gently, taking a step toward her. "You're shaking." Chloe froze, glancing down at her hands. Her fingers were trembling slightly, a dead giveaway of the adrenaline that had been surging through her blood since 8:15 PM yesterday. "I'm just furious," Chloe whispered, her eyes burning as she forced her hands into the pockets of her trousers. "He made a fool out of me." "Or," Carina said softly, reaching out to gently touch Chloe's shoulder, "He terrified you. Because for ten years, you convinced yourself he was just a ghost from your past... and last night proved he's very much real." Chloe closed her eyes, refusing to let the heavy silence answer for her. But deep down, beneath the anger and the lingering sting of her mother's words, she knew Carina was right. Mark hadn't just crashed a date—he had completely demolished the safe, predictable world she had built without him.
