For three agonizing weeks, Chloe executed a masterclass in professional evasion.
She took different routes to The Daily Grind, avoided downtown site walkthroughs, and made Jasmine screen every single client inquiry. If Mark Angelo Martinez was a phantom waiting to corner her, she was a ghost who refused to be found.
Until Monday morning.
"Conference Room A. Now," Jasmine said, popping her head into Chloe’s office with a look that crossed sheer excitement with absolute dread. "Big fish. Highest budget project we’ve seen all year. They’re waiting inside."
Chloe smoothed the lapels of her charcoal blazer, picked up her iPad and leather notebook, and gave Jasmine a confident nod. "Let's go close it."
Chloe pushed open the frosted glass door of the main conference room, her sharp signature smile already plastered on her face. "Good morning, everyone. I’m Chloe Vance, lead architect, and I’m thrilled to—"
The words froze in her throat.
Sitting at the head of the dark mahogany table, flanked by two corporate lawyers and his lead project manager, was Mark.
He was impeccably tailored in a double-breasted navy suit, his dark hair styled back, looking every bit the ruthless real estate developer. But the moment his eyes landed on her, the razor-sharp corporate executive vanished, replaced by that maddeningly confident, predatory smirk that had haunted her since third grade.
"Good morning, Ms. Vance," Mark said, his voice a low, velvety purr that resonated through the acoustic glass panels. "Please, take a seat."
Chloe stood rooted to the spot, her grip tightening so hard on her leather notebook that her knuckles turned white. She shot a lethal, silent death glare toward Jasmine, who was aggressively inspecting the carpet fibers near the door.
"What is this?" Chloe asked, dropping all corporate pleasantries, her voice laced with ice.
Mark rested his forearms on the table, folding his hands together with deliberate calm. "This is Apex Developments offering Vance & Benitez Designs an exclusive contract to design our new flagship multi-use tower downtown. A forty-million-dollar budget. Full creative freedom in the interior spatial structure."
Chloe’s heart did an uncomfortable, violent flip. Forty million. It was the exact project her firm needed to break into the international design rankings.
"You're out of your mind," Chloe said quietly, stepping closer to the table, her eyes flashing fire. "You think you can just hire my firm to force me into a room with you?"
"I hired your firm because you are, indisputably, the best structural designer in this city," Mark replied, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a fierce, unwavering gravity that made the rest of the room fade away. The playful arrogance melted into pure, unadulterated conviction. "And despite our... highly turbulent personal history, Chloe, I don't let personal grudges compromise quality."
He slid a heavy, thick black folder across the polished table. It stopped right in front of her.
"The contract is yours," Mark murmured, his voice dropping into a rough, private register that sent a sudden electric tremor straight down her spine. "Unless, of course, you're too afraid to work with me, Vance."
Chloe looked down at the folder, then back up into his burning, dark eyes. The trap was set, perfectly engineered, and completely inescapable.
She reached out, pulled the chair across from him, and sat down.
"I'm not afraid of anything you do, Martinez," Chloe whispered, her chin lifting with dangerous pride. "Let's talk blueprints."
The heavy glass doors of Conference Room A clicked shut behind Mark and his legal team, leaving an overwhelming silence in the room.
Chloe stood frozen at the head of the table, staring at the thick, leather-bound contract as if it might detonate at any second.
Jasmine waited precisely three seconds before letting out a loud, theatrical squeal, dropping her tablet onto the table, and leaning against the wall for support.
"Forty. Million. Dollars." Jasmine pressed her palms against her cheeks, looking at Chloe with wide, sparkling eyes. "Chloe Vance, you absolute hypocrite, I could kiss you!"
Chloe whipped her head around, her cheeks burning hot. "I am not a hypocrite! That was a hostile corporate takeover of my personal boundaries!"
"Oh, please!" Jasmine scoffed, marching over to the table and snatching up the contract to flip through the pages. "The man walked in here looking like a million bucks—well, forty million bucks—handed us the biggest contract in our firm’s history on a silver platter, and all he asked in return was the privilege of watching you glaring at him across a conference table for six months!"
"He set a trap, Jas!" Chloe threw her hands up, pacing the length of the glass wall. "He knew I couldn't say no to a forty-million-dollar flagship project without completely compromising my professional integrity! He used my own ambition against me!"
"And it was gorgeous," Jasmine said, fanning herself with the signed cover page. "The drama! The tension! The way he said 'Unless, of course, you're too afraid to work with me, Vance'—I almost fainted, Chloe. I felt like an extra in a multi-million-dollar romance film!"
"Traitor," Chloe hissed, pointing an accusatory finger at her best friend. "You knew it was him before I walked in that door, didn't you?"
Jasmine offered a completely unrepentant, dazzling smile. "I am the co-owner and CFO of this firm. My job is to bring in money and keep you from living in a drafting bubble. If that means letting your tall, dark, extremely wealthy ex-boyfriend buy us our dream project, I will sign the paperwork myself!"
"He is not my boyfriend!"
"Right, right, my bad," Jasmine chuckled, leaning against the edge of the table and crossing her arms. "He's just your third-grade science fair enemy, high school secret lover, freshman year heartbreak, and current real estate benefactor. Totally different."
Chloe dropped her head into her hands with a low groan, sinking into her executive chair. "This is going to be a disaster. Do you have any idea how many late-night site walkthroughs and budget review meetings this is going to take? I'm going to have to spend twenty hours a week in a room with him."
Jasmine’s teasing smile softened, stepping closer and giving Chloe’s shoulder a gentle, supportive squeeze. "Hey. Look on the bright side."
Chloe looked up, raising an eyebrow. "What bright side?"
Jasmine smirked, winking at her. "At least this time, Vance... he's paying you to fight with him."
Chloe picked up a thick fabric swatch book from the table and hurled it directly at Jasmine’s head.
Jasmine ducked effortlessly, the heavy book thudding harmlessly onto the carpet behind her. She didn't even flinch; she just burst into a louder, more obnoxious laugh, leaning against the mahogany table for support.
"Violence, Vance? Really?" Jasmine gasped, wiping a genuine tear of amusement from the corner of her eye. "Is that your official response to a forty-million-dollar retainage? Because I’m pretty sure 'throwing heavy interior samples at your CFO' isn't in the employee handbook."
"You deserve worse," Chloe growled, trying—and failing miserably—to maintain her lethal scowl. Her face was dangerously flush, a dark shade of pink creeping up her neck. "You ambushed me! You stood there looking at carpet samples while he backed me into a financial corner!"
"Oh, poor little Chloe," Jasmine cooed in a ridiculously high-pitched, mocking voice, holding a hand over her heart. "Backed into a corner by a broad-shouldered billionaire in a tailored suit who looks at you like he wants to eat you alive. Whatever will you do? How will you survive the tragic plight of becoming the most successful designer in the state?"
"He's not a billionaire, he's a real estate developer," Chloe snapped, though her voice lacked any real bite. She crossed her arms, sinking deeper into her leather chair. "And he doesn't look at me like that."
"Chloe, the man was practically breathing down your neck from across a six-foot conference table," Jasmine said, dropping the theatrical voice and stepping closer, a wicked, triumphant grin plastered across her face. "When you said 'I'm not afraid of anything you do, Martinez,'I'm pretty sure his pulse jumped into triple digits. I saw his tie twitch!"
"You were paying way too much attention to his necktie, Jasmine."
"I was paying attention to the chemistry, darling! It was practically radiating off the glass walls! I thought the sprinklers were going to go off!" Jasmine leaned over the desk, resting her chin in her hands as she looked at Chloe with pure, unadulterated delight. "Admission time, Vance. On a scale of one to ten, how hard was your heart beating when he slid that black folder across the table?"
Chloe opened her mouth to lie, to give a calm, professional, completely detached number like zero.
Instead, she let out a long, defeated breath, dropping her forehead straight down onto the cool surface of the mahogany table.
"Ten," Chloe muffled into the wood, her voice sounding entirely hopeless. "A absolute ten."
Jasmine let out a victorious gasp, clapping her hands together. "I knew it!"
"He smelled like cedar and rain, Jas," Chloe groaned, turning her head to the side so her cheek rested on the table, staring miserably at the far wall. "It’s the exact same cologne he used to wear in high school, just... more expensive. It’s unfair. The universe is playing dirty."
"The universe isn't playing dirty, Chloe," Jasmine said, her teasing tone softening into something warm and genuinely supportive as she gave Chloe's shoulder a firm squeeze. "The universe is just giving you two stubborn idiots a second chance. Now get up, wash your face, and let's go spend Mark Angelo Martinez's money."
