I know it’s best, but, Lydia, I can’t stand the thought of leaving you.” Duncan blushed at declaring his feelings. “But we can write letters, and when we’re of age we can . . .” Just then Albert, who had been eavesdropping from around the corner, spoke up. “You can what, Duncan? Trying to steal my girl, are you? Not going to happen, especially with you off in Chicago.” Albert smirked. “No need to worry. I’ll take good care of Lydia.” “Albert McGee. I’ve had it with you spying on me! Come on, Duncan, walk with me.” She left
