Chapter 16
A lot of candidates grumbled when they were told the interview had been cancelled. They wanted to be Salvatore's secretary so it came as a blow to them when they heard a candidate had been chosen already.
The guard had to force them to leave, chasing them out of the company before they created a ruckus. Once the hall was cleared, all activities on the first floor went back to normal and everyone went back to their position.
.
Isabella paced to and fro in the small space of her office. She wasn't bothered by the fact that her office is basically just her desk, computer and six chairs seated against the wall opposite her desk in an open space that is like a lobby to Salvatore's office and anyone who walks in right now would find her lazing around.
She kept thinking of ways to stop Emilia and Ariana from succeeding in the plan to replace her and also find a way to stay in Salvatore’s life as well.
Recalling what she heard about Salvatore hating the idea of being tied down by any kind of relationship, an idea struck her and she smirked. Without wasting time, Isabella hurried into their office kitchen, she prepared a cup of coffee and cookies and brought it to Salvatore.
It took two quick raps on the door and a little delay before Salvatore finally asked her to come in. She put on a blank expression and walked to his table as if she were just there to deliver his coffee. Isabella placed the coffee on his desk and moved back a little while doing her best not to be too hasty.
Salvatore eyed her for a minute before picking up the cup of coffee and taking a sip out of it.
‘Good,’ he commended, and Isabella turned around to leave.
After taking just a few steps away from him, she turned around and stared at him.
‘I have a question, sir,’ she said, her eyes fixed on his.
‘What is it?’ Salvatore asked, wanting to be rid of her presence as soon as he could.
‘Did you sleep with me knowing you have a fiancé who is waiting for you to take her to the altar?’
Salvatore’s hand froze just as he was about to tilt the cup to his lip, he lifted his cold eyes to look at her, finally acknowledging her presence since she entered.
‘Who put that horrible idea in your head?’ His tone was deadly.
‘I overheard the chairperson and your brother’s fiancé discussing the preparation they have in mind for your wedding when I went to their office to serve them coffee,’ Isabella lied.
‘And when did it become your job to serve my mother coffee when she only put Ariana in charge of her stuff?’ He asked.
Isabella was tongue-tied, she had thought of different possibilities and reactions to her plan, and she had expected Salvatore to lose his temper and march right into his mother’s office and let hell loose in there. What she hadn’t anticipated was the way he remained calm like she didn’t just tell him he would be getting married while also berating her.
‘Don’t make me repeat my question, Isabella,’ his tone made the hairs on her body lift in straight strands, and she flinched.
‘Miss Ariana used to come to get your mother’s coffee around 10:30 every morning but it is already 11:15 so I figure they must be so busy with the interview and I decided to assist in the only way I could,’ Salvatore’s expression didn’t change one bit and Isabella realise she would have to add in a little bit of truth.
‘I may have also tried to win their favours, maybe if they see how efficient I am, they would let me keep my job. This is my only hope of survival,’ she admitted.
‘Well a word of advice from me to you, don’t try too hard because my mother won't change her mind,’ he raised his hand to prevent her from saying any word. ‘You can go back to your desk.’
Defeated, Isabella had no choice but to leave. She realized Salvatore must want to get rid of her if he didn’t react the normal way she knew he’d react to something of that magnitude. She flopped down on her seat once she was out of his office and huffed in anger.
If hearing about his marriage didn't move him to take action against his mother’s plan for him, she wondered what would.
Unknown to Isabella, the moment she stepped out of Salvatore’s office, he pushed everything off of his table in resentment. He was beyond livid but he couldn’t give Isabella the satisfaction of seeing him lose control of his feelings because he knew that was exactly what she wanted.
She had been acting sketchy since she came to work this morning and when he saw her packing her stuff he knew something was office. Since her office was right outside his, he heard the shattering sound of an object when she was throwing her little tantrum and he knew she had something up her sleeve, that is why he was a little bit relieved when he heard his mother would be replacing her soon.
But marriage! His mother had gone too far this time.
He had done everything she asked for, he tried to be obedient when she needed him to be and his little scandal when it came to the opposite gender was his way of rebelling and letting her know she didn’t have all the cards.
‘f**k,’ Salvatore cursed under his breath, pushing his hand into his hair.
What else did she want from him? What else does she want him to do? If only he could remember, if only his memory would come back maybe then he would be free from her hold. Salvatore seethes at the thought of being tied down by marriage, especially a marriage that he had no say in.
It was high time all this s**t stopped, even though he knew his mother would use his career as bait to get him to agree to her crooked plan, he was prepared to let her know who had the upper hand. It was high time to let every one of them know who they were messing with.
Salvatore picked up his suit and pulled out his phone, he dialled Luca's number and waited for a while. The phone stopped ringing and Luca's voice filled his ear.
‘Boss,’ Luca greeted. ‘Do you need me to bring a stress reliever to you?’
‘No, Luca, there is something else I need you to do for me,’ Salvatore declared. ‘I believe you still have it in you for special tasks, right?’
‘Anytime, any day,’ Luca replied.
‘Then I have a special task for you.’
