Chapter 25Sometimes, one word can shut the rest of the world out. * * * Scarlett's car pulled up to the curb a few feet from the pier a few minutes after she hung up with Dax and Jules. As she plopped down into her seat, the weight of nearly twenty-four hours without sleep pressed down on her. Her shoulders sagged and her eyelids grew heavy. The sudden silence of the car's interior pressed in on her ears. She set the car's autodrive. Knowing she might not get much sleep in the next day or so, she let herself doze as the vehicle wound its way through the early morning rush-hour traffic.
