Chapter 9The stains of life and pain can show through when we need them most. * * * The darkness gave way to blurry twinklings of light. Rustling signaled movement nearby. Scarlett groaned and turned her head. The pinpoints of light shifted. Even when her vision should have started to clear, everything remained a dark blur. “Hello?” Scarlett mumbled. She shook her head and pain exploded behind her eyes. Ow, damn. She blinked a few times and realized her head was covered with some kind of cloth. Scarlett found herself propped up, leaning against something cold and hard. Her hands were bound behind her. She shoved her elbows back, creating a hollow bang like the wall behind her was a large piece of sheet metal. The sound reverberated into her skull, starting a dull ache behind her eyes.
