Leo was finally healed, and seeing him smile again warmed my heart completely, I could not wait to see him full of life again.
Julian had been coming around every morning without fail, and we had fallen into something that looked very much like two people raising a child together while carefully avoiding the conversation sitting between them. He would arrive, I would hand Leo over, and we would exchange exactly as many words as Leo required us to and not a single one more.
"Uncle Julian, watch me…watch me kick it," Leo announced from the sitting room floor, his little foot connected with the small foam ball Julian had brought him, sending it directly into the side table.
"That was a goal," Julian told him with complete seriousness.
