Leo walked back into his room from the bathroom with his pajamas on and his hair damp, looking deeply pleased with himself.
"Oh, cute pajamas," I told him, settling onto the edge of his bed, "Amanda sure listens to everything you say."
"She is the best in the whole world," Leo replied with complete conviction, climbing up beside me.
"Did you tell her thank you?"
He turned around immediately and found Amanda standing in the doorway. "Thank you miss, aunty Amanda."
Amanda pressed her hand to her chest and I caught her eye and we both laughed, the kind of laugh that came easy and warm, and Leo looked between us with the expression of a child who knew he had done something right but was not entirely sure what.
He bounced onto his pillow and looked up at me. "Mama, read me a story
