Chapter 2

The original post twisted the facts completely upside down: Do some women think the whole world owes them a favor just because they have a kid? She lifted her shirt to breastfeed in front of everyone in public, no shame at all, and when a coworker made a little joke to remind her, she slapped them across the face. She came back from maternity leave holding onto that executive position, hasn’t shown an ounce of real skill, but her temper was blown through the roof. I’ve attached proof, see for yourselves! Three photos were posted below the text. The first was a sneak shot of the moment she ripped my shirt open, taken from a deliberately skewed angle. The second was my back as I held my baby, shirt half slipping off, looking completely disheveled and humiliated. The third was a close-up of her holding her cheek, eyes red and puffy, with the caption "The Victim" underneath. The photos were supposedly blurred, but the mosaic was practically useless. The hint of my body's outline and the context were more than enough to let people’s minds run wild. The comment section had already exploded: A: [Holy s**t, that's wild? The annual party turned into a milk mom sideshow?] B: [Hitting someone is so out of line, right? That girl was just being nice, worried she'd smother the baby.] C: [We're all women, what's the big deal about a little touch? People get so dramatic once they're moms.] Private message notifications kept popping up nonstop: Anonymous User: Got more of those breastfeeding pics? Send 'em to me privately, I wanna see? Anonymous User: How much do you charge? Name your price. Anonymous User: Quit acting all high and mighty. Everyone already saw the whole thing, no need to put on a chaste act. I took a deep breath and reached out directly to the forum admin. Charlotte: Hello, this is Charlotte Hayes. That trending forum post contains malicious defamation, secretly taken photos, and distribution of inappropriate photos targeting me personally, which constitutes severe infringement. Please delete it immediately and help provide the information of the user who made the post. A few minutes later, the reply came. Forum admin: Ms. Hayes, this forum is an anonymous section, everyone has the right to express their personal opinions. The images have been blurred, so they don't meet the deletion criteria. We suggest you communicate with your coworker privately to smooth things over. 'Smooth things over.' That goddamned phrase again. In my past life, I had faced this exact situation. Every single time she pulled one of her so-called "jokes", my supervisors, coworkers, even HR all said that exact thing to me. They told me to be the bigger person, to grin and bear it, to think of the bigger picture for the company. And she, the actual perpetrator, only got bolder and more vicious with every test she got away with. They only picked on the nice guys, only targeted people who wouldn’t fight back. A cold chill crawled up my spine, but it was quickly swallowed up by blistering hot rage. 'No. Not this life. I wasn't going to stay quiet anymore.' I held my baby tight and walked straight to the office of my direct supervisor, Vice President Damien Volkszki. I knocked and walked in to find Vice President Volkszki going through some documents. I laid out the whole situation clearly and concisely. At first, he was all fired up, saying he'd definitely stick up for me, but the second he heard Naomi's name, all that bluster fizzled out instantly. He forced an awkward, stiff smile. "Charlotte, are you sure this isn't just some big misunderstanding? That girl's always been so cheerful and friendly, she probably just took a joke too far, right?" This sudden 180 in attitude made me frown. Just then, there were two lightly, quick knocks on the office door. Naomi pushed the door open and walked in, her eyes still red-rimmed. "Mr. Volkszki, I heard what you two were talking about." She turned to me, eyes wide with forced innocence. "Charlotte, I really didn’t mean it. I'm sorry." Vice President Volkszki let out a loud laugh and jumped in to play peacemaker. "See? Naomi's being so reasonable! We're all coworkers here. What conflict can't be sorted out?" I watched the two of them play good cop, bad cop right in front of me, and the hazy guess I'd been turning over in my head clicked into sharp focus. She turned back to Vice President Volkszki. "Oh, right, Mr. Volkszki! My dad was just asking me how that new collab project he mentioned last time is coming along on your end. He told me I should pick your brain as much as possible, y'know?" Vice President Volkszki's posturing grin stretched even wider, a faint, almost unnoticeable edge of deference creeping into his expression. "Director Prescott is too kind! That project has amazing prospects. I'm already pushing it forward as fast as I can." 'Director Prescott.' Those two words hit me like a key turning in a lock, and every last piece of the puzzle slid into place all at once. Now I knew why she'd dared to act so recklessly, why people always scrambled to cover for her. She wasn't some ordinary intern. She wasn't just a coworker who got away with everything because she was cheerful and outgoing. She was the top executive's spoiled daughter. This relentless, targeted workplace harassment had never just been a harmless joke or a simple personality clash from the very start. It was a deliberate, pre-planned power play to force me out of my position. She wanted my position, and me being a mom? That was the easiest, lowest-effort ammo she used against me. 'But not this time. This time, I knew exactly how to fight back.'
