Chapter 6: I'm Allergic to Filth

493 Words
As Linda Wang spoke, her eyes turned red, partly from the pain Emma had inflicted and partly from her poor attempt at acting. Emma suddenly smiled and released Linda’s chin. "What are you thinking? I was just joking." She casually took a wet wipe from her bag and meticulously cleaned her hand, as if she had touched something dirty. Linda watched, her anger reaching a boiling point. What was this supposed to mean? Was this washed-up wife implying she was dirty? Linda wanted to tear her apart right there, but seeing the person standing behind Emma, she swallowed her fury. Fine, keep up this act. Let's see how you handle it when things get out of hand. Emma noticed the fire in Linda's eyes but remained unbothered. In fact, she seemed to relish it. "Sorry, I have a bit of a cleanliness obsession. Can't stand even a hint of filth." She tossed the wet wipe into a nearby trash can. Linda's face alternated between red and white with rage, but she maintained her innocent act. "Mrs. Whitman, you’ve really misunderstood. There's nothing between me and the CEO." Emma looked at her with feigned confusion. "Didn’t I just say I was joking? You’re really uptight, can’t even take a joke." Linda: "..." Inwardly, Linda seethed, cursing Emma furiously. She thought this might be the moment Emma finally made a fool of herself. However, Emma continued, "Nicholas may be blind, but he wouldn't settle for just anything." "You...," Linda started, her face contorting with rage. She then saw who was behind Emma and felt a surge of malicious joy. "Mrs. Whitman, how can you say the CEO is blind?" "Severe myopia isn't much different from blindness. Even if he isn't literally blind, bringing someone like you to events? Who's he insulting?" Emma's nonchalant tone was laced with sharpness. Then she pretended to have an epiphany. "Oh, I get it. I heard he only takes you to the less important events. For the high-end ones, he always takes Adam, right?" Linda's heart sank, sensing the unpleasant turn of the conversation. "Of course. He may be blind, but he's not stupid. He knows you're as dumb as a rock and can't speak properly. Taking you to a high-profile event might lead you to say something inappropriate and offend important people, causing trouble for him." Linda's expression darkened. "You..." "And for those ordinary events, he probably doesn't want to deal with them himself, so taking you along makes sense. After all, making use of useless things isn’t a bad strategy." Emma’s tone was calm and matter-of-fact, making her words all the more cutting. "After all, Ms. Wang, your only value in the secretarial office is precisely that. Don't you agree?" She ended with an elegant smile, completely unruffled by the confrontation, her demeanor graceful and composed. It was a stark contrast to the usual response of a wife being provoked by a mistress, making her even more formidable.
