Chapter 4: Getting the Divorce Certificate

546 Words
Since their marriage, Nicholas Sinclair either didn't come home for days or returned in the middle of the night. It was the first time he had come back so early. Are the thoughts of those in power always this unpredictable? Mrs. Green, though puzzled, didn't ask questions. She quickly instructed the workers to stop their tasks. Nicholas went upstairs with a grim expression, opening the door to the master bedroom. It was empty and devoid of any signs of life. He rarely came home at this hour, but no matter how late he returned, Emma would always be there waiting for him. Even if she had fallen asleep, she would wake up when he came in, greeting him with joy and concern. Today, however, the empty room felt strangely unsettling. A surge of inexplicable irritation rose within him. He pulled off his tie and threw it aside, his eyes scanning the room. Nothing seemed drastically different, yet something felt changed. He checked the bookshelf; more than half of the books were gone. He opened the closet, finding it still full, but not a single item of Emma's clothing remained. Nicholas frowned, refusing to believe that Emma had really agreed to the divorce and moved out. Is she playing hard to get? The thought made his expression even more sarcastic. Despite his conviction that Emma wouldn't easily agree to a divorce, the gnawing anxiety and frustration in his heart refused to subside. After leaving the house she had shared with Nicholas for a year, Emma Whitman went straight to her apartment in the city center. Though she seldom stayed there, it was always kept clean by a hired help. Setting down her luggage, she took out her phone and made a call. It was quickly answered by a groggy voice, clearly just waking up. "Emma, I just dreamt about you, and here you are calling. We must be in sync," the man said. Ignoring his comment, Emma got straight to the point. "I need you to investigate something. Gather the evidence and send it to me." After explaining what she needed, she hung up the phone, her eyes hardening with resolve. The next morning, Emma rose early, got ready, and drove to the civil affairs office with all the necessary documents. By the time she arrived, the office had already opened, and people were steadily coming in to handle marriage and divorce paperwork. Emma stood at the entrance, patiently waiting for an hour, but Nicholas was nowhere to be seen. Growing impatient, she tried calling Nicholas, but there was no answer. She then called Adam Clarke, only to find his phone turned off as well. Checking the time, she realized there was only an hour left before the office closed. Frustrated, she decided to drive to Sinclair Tower. At Sinclair Corporation, Emma parked her car and walked straight into the building. As she entered, she encountered a curvaceous, striking woman. The woman had chestnut-colored hair cascading in waves over one shoulder, surgically enhanced eyes with parallel double eyelids, full lips, and a sharply defined chin—a typical social media influencer's look. Her tailored business attire accentuated her curves provocatively. Emma recognized her. She had seen this woman several times before when she brought lunch to Nicholas.
