Chapter 12: That Damn Woman

494 Words
Adam Clarke had no intention of irritating his clearly displeased boss by standing up for an incompetent fool. One would think that being accepted into the secretarial office required a certain level of intelligence, but it seemed ambition had blinded Linda Wang’s sense of reality. Adam cast a disdainful glance at Linda. "Resign voluntarily. If you're forced out by security, you'll lose even the last bit of dignity you have left." "Mr. Clarke! Mr. Clarke!" Linda's cries echoed through the lobby of Sinclair Corporation, her composure shattered. None of the employees who had enjoyed the spectacle approached to comfort her. No one wanted to be associated with someone who had foolishly tried to overstep her bounds and was now facing the consequences. After dealing with Linda, Adam hurried to the elevator. The memory of Nicholas Sinclair's terrifyingly grim expression troubled him. He couldn’t understand why Mrs. Whitman was suddenly so eager to get divorced, nor could he fathom why Nicholas, who had initially pushed for the divorce, now seemed reluctant. As soon as Adam reached the upper floors, his phone rang. He saw Emma's name on the caller ID. While Emma had contacted him in the past to find Nicholas, he instinctively knew this call was going to be a problem. Hesitating to answer, a secretary hurried over. "Mr. Clarke, the CEO is asking for you." "...Alright." Adam didn’t answer Emma's call, and it continued to ring as he entered Nicholas's office. The cold, sharp look from Nicholas was enough to freeze anyone in their tracks. Seeing the icy glare directed at his phone, Adam quickly approached and handed it to Nicholas. "It's... it's Mrs. Whitman." Nicholas's face remained stony. Feeling the tension, Adam cautiously asked, "Should I answer it, sir?" "Answer!" Nicholas barked. Adam pressed the answer button and put the call on speaker. Emma's voice came through, clearly irritated. "Mr. Clarke, tell Nicholas that my time is not for him to waste. If he can't make it to finalize the divorce today, he needs to give me a definite time." "Mrs. Whitman, the CEO has some urgent matters to attend to today. Could you wait a bit longer? Once he's done, I’ll check with him again," Adam said, trying to navigate the situation delicately. "Fine. But tell him to hurry up! If he can't even handle a simple divorce, what kind of man is he?" Emma snapped. Adam glanced at Nicholas, whose expression had darkened further. The next moment, Nicholas snatched the phone from Adam's hand. "Emm—" Nicholas started, but the line went dead before he could finish. Adam stood there, feeling the tension rise as Nicholas's face grew even darker. It was as if his head was on the chopping block. Nicholas experienced for the first time the frustration of being hung up on by Emma. The anger that had been simmering within him flared up, threatening to explode. That damn woman was really pushing him to the edge.
