A few colleagues nearby couldn't help but chuckle quietly at Emma's words. Though they tried to stifle their laughter, Linda Wang heard them, and her face turned an ugly shade of red.
When Emma entered the company building, Linda had deliberately raised her voice to attract an audience, hoping to humiliate Emma in front of them. Instead, she had humiliated herself.
Linda was, in fact, just a secretary, rarely involved in important work. She was only brought along when Nicholas needed a female companion for social events. Her looks and figure made her stand out among the secretarial staff, which she had always considered an advantage. However, Emma's blunt words had turned this supposed advantage into a mockery.
Thinking about it made Linda fume, while Emma's calm smile only added fuel to the fire. Even knowing that Nicholas was behind Emma didn't make Linda feel any better.
"So, instead of overstepping your bounds and meddling in my affairs, why not spend some time looking in the mirror to understand the saying 'ugly behavior comes from ugly people'?" Emma finished, preparing to leave.
Suddenly, Linda exclaimed, "Mr. Sinclair!"
Feigning surprise, she put on a display of her mediocre acting skills, showcasing her supposed hurt from Emma's scolding.
Her eyes were red as she looked pitifully at Nicholas, biting her lip and stammering, "Mrs. Whitman... she seems to have misunderstood our relationship."
Linda chose her words carefully. If Nicholas denied any relationship with her, he might scold Emma publicly, making her lose face. If Nicholas confirmed their relationship, it would elevate Linda's status and discourage others from crossing her.
Linda's fantasies, however, were quickly dashed as Nicholas ignored her words, his cold eyes fixed on Emma's slightly indifferent expression.
Emma had turned around at Linda's exclamation and saw Nicholas and Adam Clarke, looking like they had just returned from a business meeting. She didn't bother with pleasantries, instead cutting straight to the point.
"The divorce agreement is signed. Weren't we supposed to finalize it today? I waited at the civil affairs office for an hour. You're wasting my time."
Her tone was cold, carrying a hint of accusation. This was the first time Nicholas had heard her speak to him in such a manner since they married.
Though Nicholas didn't know Emma well, he knew she wasn't usually bad-tempered. The little warmth she had was reserved for him. Her cold attitude now felt strangely unfamiliar.
Nicholas found himself uncharacteristically unsettled by Emma's demeanor. Even her earlier public remark about his blindness was momentarily forgotten.
His gaze lingered on Emma's eyes, which were usually filled with love for him but were now cold and distant. This sudden detachment stirred an unexpected anger within him.
Nicholas took a step closer to Emma, his presence imposing enough to make her unconsciously step back.
"What is this about, Emma?" Nicholas's voice was low, containing a hint of suppressed frustration.
