Love Against the Odds

Chapter Twelve

I got out of bed to go meet my parents under protest. I wanted to stay with Rayne but they are only in town for the weekend so I have to spend time with them. Rayne was nibbling on my ear as I was getting dressed teasing and tempting me. She knows how to get to me and she enjoys it! It was not easy leaving her! 

At the restaurant my parents were already seated and drinking coffee.  When I joined the my dad said “I really like Rayne! She was a sweet kid years ago and I think she has turned out to be a wonderful adult.”  

“ Thanks dad, I think so too!”  I said “Mom, what do think of her?” 

Mom was silent for a moment then uttered “She seems nice. So how is school going?” 

Way to dodge a question I thought to myself! Mom never seemed to take a liking to any of my girlfriends so I guess I should not be surprised she is not complimentary of Rayne. 

“School is fine.” I said letting her change the subject.

“Never mind your mom, in her eyes no woman will ever be good enough for her little boy.” Dad joked “make sure you marry a strong willed woman who can withstand a very protective mother-in-law!”

“Funny you say that Dad, I asked Rayne to marry me just last night and she said yes.” 

“What?” My mother hissed “neither if you are ready for marriage! What are you thinking Nate.” 

“Well we are not getting married tomorrow mom.” I replied “I am going to finish school and get a full time job in broadcasting before we marry. The school is supposed to have 99% placement so I will find a job. Rayne can sell art anywhere so relocation is not a huge issue. We will be fine.”

“Just don’t think you need to be talking marriage!” Mom huffed “Neither of you are ready.”

“Well I think she is a catch son, congratulations!” Dad has always been way more supportive on everything in my life than my mom. 

“I have started playing around with one of those genealogy sites Nate, I want you to send in your DNA and your dad and even Rayne. It will be fun to learn some genealogy.” Mom said out of the blue. Your kits will come in the mail soon. “

“Ok, I can do that.”  I replied. Mom rarely involves me in any of her hobbies so I really had to agree no matter how silly it seemed.  Although I am not real happy about her attitude toward Rayne I was glad she wanted to include her in her little genealogy game. 

After breakfast we went back to my apartment so they could see where I am living, although I am rarely there as we spend most of our time at Rayne’s place. We had a decent visit and then my parents headed back home.  This left me free to return to my Rayne! 

On the drive to Rayne’s apartment I was thinking about my mom’s remarks that almost dripped venom when she talked about Rayne, the woman I love and want to spend the rest of life with. I cannot figure out what her problem is! But I have come to the conclusion that nobody will keep from her! There is nothing anyone can say or do to separate us, I will not allow it. Not even my own mother can keep us from being together. I need to make sure Rayne is never hurt by my mom’s harsh attitude towards us. I am not sure how but I vow I will not let my mom or anyone hurt her!
