CHAPTER SEVEN

The First Crack in Fate _______________________________________ The battlefield went silent. Not peaceful. Silent. The kind of silence that came before bloodshed. Seraphina stared at Kael. "The timeline has changed." Those words had been circling her mind ever since he spoke them. Three kingdoms attacking Ashbourne at the same time had never happened in her previous life. She remembered the war. She remembered the burning villages. She remembered Adrian standing before the Council, declaring that the Western Kingdom had attacked first. She remembered the royal army marching west. But there had been no eastern invasion. No attack on the southern ports. And certainly no war with House Draven. Something was different. Something—or someone—was moving pieces on a board she couldn't see. "How much do you remember?" she whispered. Kael looked at her. "Enough." "That's not an answer." "No." His expression remained unreadable. "It isn't." Seraphina stepped closer. "Then tell me everything." Kael's jaw tightened. "No." Her eyes narrowed. "You're becoming irritating." "I've been told." "Kael." "Seraphina." She froze. He had never called her by her name before. Not like that. Not without a title. Not as a queen. Just... Seraphina. Something about it felt strangely intimate. She immediately pushed the thought away. "I don't have time for your games." "Neither do I." "Then explain." Kael looked toward the distant mountains. "When I died, I was thirty-one." Seraphina's breath caught. He continued. "I was standing in the capital." "Your capital?" "No." His eyes darkened. "Yours." Seraphina went still. "Why were you there?" "Because Adrian had asked me to come." She stared at him. "Adrian?" Kael nodded. "In the final days of the war, the King finally realized the Crown was collapsing. He summoned every surviving commander." His gaze lowered. "And you." Seraphina swallowed. "What happened to me?" Kael didn't answer. She already knew. Her death. The Black Tower. The execution platform. But something about his silence suggested there was more. "What happened?" Kael's eyes met hers. "I arrived too late." A strange ache appeared in Seraphina's chest. "Too late for what?" "To save you." She stopped breathing. Kael looked away. "I found your execution order." Her fingers slowly curled. "And?" "I tried to stop it." Her heart hammered. "Did you?" "No." One word. Cold. Final. Seraphina suddenly remembered something from her previous life. A rumor. A rumor she had dismissed because she was too frightened to believe it. The day before her execution, the northern army had attempted to enter the capital. The palace guards had fought them. She had assumed Kael was attacking the Crown. But perhaps... He had been trying to reach her. "You came for me." Kael didn't respond. "You came to save me." Still nothing. Seraphina's voice became quieter. "Why?" His expression hardened. "That question belongs to another lifetime." --- A horn sounded from the fortress walls. Both turned. Commander Elena was running toward them. "Your Grace!" Kael immediately became serious. "What?" "We received another message from the capital." She handed him a sealed letter. Seraphina recognized the royal crest. Kael opened it. His eyes moved across the page. Then stopped. "What's wrong?" He handed it to her. Seraphina read. Her face went pale. It was an official proclamation. By order of His Majesty King Adrian Ashbourne... Lady Seraphina Everhart is declared missing under suspicious circumstances. Grand Duke Kael Draven is hereby accused of abducting the Crown's intended bride. House Draven will be considered guilty of treason should Lady Seraphina not be returned within forty-eight hours. Seraphina stared at the parchment. "They're blaming you." "Naturally." "They'll attack." "They already have." "No." She shook her head. "This isn't about me." Kael's expression changed. "What?" Seraphina looked toward the fortress walls. "The invasions." Her mind raced. The Western Kingdom. The Eastern Alliance. The southern ports. And now... House Draven was being accused of treason. Four crises. Four directions. All at once. Someone wasn't simply changing history. Someone was **creating chaos**. "These attacks aren't random," Seraphina whispered. Kael watched her carefully. "Explain." "If the Crown believes you're responsible for kidnapping me, they'll send the army north." "Yes." "If the royal army comes north, Adrian will weaken the capital's defenses." "Continue." "The western army attacks." "Correct." "The eastern alliance attacks." "Correct." "And the southern ports are already under assault." Kael's eyes narrowed. Seraphina looked at him. "Someone is forcing Ashbourne to fight on four fronts." Elena's expression changed. "Why?" Seraphina's stomach tightened. "Because while everyone is fighting..." She looked toward the distant capital. "...someone walks into the palace." Kael went completely still. "Who?" "I don't know." And that frightened her. Because in her previous life... Someone had entered the palace during the first great war. Someone who had stolen something from the Royal Archive. Something that had never been recovered. Something Seraphina hadn't even known existed until the final year of her life. The Crown of Asteria. The legendary relic said to have belonged to the first Queen of Ashbourne. A relic that supposedly didn't merely grant authority. It could alter destiny. Seraphina's face drained of color. "The Crown." Kael's eyes sharpened. "What about it?" "They're going after the Crown of Asteria." Elena frowned. "I thought that was a legend." "So did I." Kael stepped closer. "Seraphina." She looked at him. "How do you know it exists?" Her lips parted. There were some things she had never told anyone. Not even herself. "I saw it." "Where?" "Under the palace." Kael's expression changed. "You've been there?" "In my previous life." She remembered the final days. The hidden staircase. The ancient chamber. The Crown resting beneath a glass-like crystal. And Vivienne standing beside it. Seraphina's blood ran cold. "Vivienne." Kael immediately understood. "Your friend?" "She wasn't just after my throne." Seraphina's voice trembled. "She was looking for something beneath it." --- That night, Seraphina couldn't sleep. She stood beside the window of her chamber, staring at the moon. The pendant Kael had given her rested against her chest. She touched it absentmindedly. Her thoughts returned to the past. To Lucien. To Vivienne. To Adrian. To the execution. But most of all... To Kael. He had remembered. He had tried to save her. And he had died. For the first time, Seraphina wondered whether her death had destroyed more than herself. A soft knock interrupted her thoughts. "Come in." The door opened. Kael stood there. No armor. No sword. Just a dark shirt and trousers, his silver hair slightly disheveled. Seraphina raised an eyebrow. "Do you usually enter women's bedrooms at midnight?" "No." "Comforting." "I'm here because we have a problem." "Of course we do." He stepped inside. "The royal army has stopped advancing." Seraphina frowned. "Why?" "They received new orders." "From Adrian?" Kael shook his head. "No." He placed a letter on the table. "From someone claiming to speak for the Crown." Seraphina unfolded it. Her blood turned cold. There was no royal seal. No signature. Only the crimson rose. The same symbol from the mysterious letter. Three words were written beneath it. SHE REMEMBERS EVERYTHING. Seraphina's fingers trembled. Kael watched her. "There's more." She looked up. "What?" "Someone entered the fortress tonight." Her stomach dropped. "An assassin?" "No." Kael's voice became dangerously quiet. "A spy." "Did you catch them?" "Yes." Seraphina waited. "Who?" Kael stared directly into her eyes. "One of your former servants." She couldn't breathe. "Who?" Kael hesitated. Then said: "Your former maid." "She's dead." "I know." Seraphina's heart stopped. Kael placed a second object on the table. A silver hairpin. Seraphina recognized it instantly. She had given it to Lily on her seventeenth birthday. Impossible. "Where did you find this?" "In the spy's possession." Seraphina looked toward the door. For the first time since returning to the past... she felt genuinely afraid. Because Lily had died in her previous life. Seraphina had watched them carry her body away. Unless... Her eyes widened. "Kael." He looked at her. "What if she didn't die?" Before he could answer— A scream tore through the fortress. Then another. Then the sound of running feet. Kael immediately reached for his sword. Seraphina grabbed hers. They rushed outside. Soldiers flooded the hallway. Commander Elena came sprinting toward them. "Your Grace!" "What happened?" "The prisoner..." Elena was breathing hard. "She's gone." Kael's expression hardened. "How?" "She escaped through the underground tunnels." Seraphina's heart hammered. "Where does the tunnel lead?" Elena looked at her. "Straight to the northern forest." Seraphina shook her head. "No." "What?" "She wouldn't run north." Kael stared at her. Seraphina suddenly understood. The tunnel didn't only lead to the forest. It had another exit. One she remembered from her previous life. A hidden passage that connected to an abandoned monastery. And from there... A secret road leading directly toward the capital. "Lily isn't escaping." Seraphina grabbed her cloak. "She's going home." Kael caught her wrist. "You're not going." She glared at him. "Let go." "No." "Kael." "Someone who supposedly died has appeared in my fortress, escaped through a secret tunnel, and is heading toward the capital while the kingdom is being attacked from four directions." His eyes hardened. "And you think I'm letting you chase her alone?" Seraphina stared at his hand around her wrist. Then at him. "You're afraid." Kael went silent. She smiled faintly. "The Wolf of the North is afraid." His expression became dangerously calm. "I'm afraid of losing another person I failed to save." Seraphina's smile disappeared. For a moment... Neither spoke. Then she quietly said: "You didn't fail me." Kael's fingers loosened. "Not yet." He released her. Seraphina stepped past him. "Let's go." Kael stared after her. "Where?" She looked over her shoulder. "To find Lily." Then her expression hardened. "And find out why the dead are suddenly walking." Far away... Beyond the mountains... A lone figure in a dark cloak walked beneath the moonlight. She stopped. Removed her hood. And revealed a familiar face. Lily. Alive. But in her hand was a letter bearing the crimson rose. She looked toward the distant capital. And whispered: "Forgive me, Your Majesty." Then she smiled. Because someone else was standing behind her. A tall figure wearing a silver mask. "You've done well." Lily bowed her head. "Is she coming?" The masked figure looked toward the north. "Of course." A pause. "She always does." The figure turned away. "And when the queen arrives..." A crimson rose fell into the snow. "...we begin the second betrayal." END OF CHAPTER SEVEN
