Chapter Three: A New Home

1578 Words
There is snow everywhere. Yuck, I thought to myself as I tried to find a decent place to go potty. Not one place was untouched by this cold, wet, white stuff. My feet were cold, I was cold, I just wanted to use the potty and it was proving quite difficult. I couldn’t decide where to go, all my normal potty places were buried underneath the snow and not to be found again until spring. I hurried as fast as I could, racing back to the house. Bark, Bark, Bark! I demanded to be let back in. It is way too cold out here. Bark, Bark, Bark! What is taking so long? I sat at the front door, shivering from the cold. I heard the door squeak as it began to open. I wasted no time; I shoved my way through the cracked door and into the house. I rolled around on the carpet to get the wetness off me and onto it. Daisy, you’re going to make the whole house smell like a wet dog, she said to me. I tilted my head to look at her before letting out a loud sneeze to show my distaste. After all, it was not my idea to have my bathroom filled with this cold wet stuff. Her bathroom was inside, no snow there. I thought to myself grumpily. My human family seemed extra excited this morning. They left for town, leaving me behind at home. I was not happy with this arrangement. How can I protect them if I am not with them? Ugh, these humans, they just do not think things through. Now I must sit at home all alone and worry about them until they get back. It was not until later that afternoon when they returned. Their excitement seemed to be overflowing. I looked around, trying to figure out what we were excited about. Odd, nothing out of the ordinary…. I continued to watch, they were grabbing more of their belongings from the house and packing it outside. Then I noticed that the smaller human was stealing my dishes and my bed! I immediately leapt into action. Running over to her to see what on earth she was doing with my stuff. Hey, put that back! OOooOOoo, Rrrr, OOooOOoo, I said. Oh, hush Daisy, mom told me pack your stuff, so we can take it to the new house. I looked at her in disbelief, but this is mine, these are my things. What new house? What is this small human talking about? I followed, hot on her heels. She had my things; I was not going to let her out of my site. I watched as she placed everything in the car before going back for more. Just then, Frankie bolted from his house to see me. He sniffed and jumped around me excitedly, trying to get me to chase him for a game of tag. I was too nervous to play though. Frankie sat with me, and we watched my humans load a few more items into the vehicle. My human mom got the small human and I loaded into the car while my human dad got in his truck. I stared out the window. Frankie seemed just as confused as I was. His human, the small human calls her Omi, had scooped him up and was holding him in her arms as everyone said goodbye. I looked out the windows for a bit before finally settling down for a quick nap. It did not take us long at all to get to where we were going. I was put inside the new house, there were boxes and bags everywhere. Hey, this is our stuff. How did this get here? I trotted through the house looking everything over. I could smell that another dog had lived here before us, but the smell was faint, it had been a while since they’d been here. When I had finished looking through the house, I went back to see what everyone else was doing. I hopped up on the bench by the door and lay there watching while my family unloaded the vehicles, packing everything into the garage. The small human came inside with me, bringing my stuff in the house. What do you think of our new house, Daisy? Isn’t it nice! Have you seen my room yet? Come with me, I’ll show you. I hopped down and followed her. The small human gave me a complete tour of the home. She pointed out the window, our yard goes way back into the trees, there are trails back there! Mom said we need to stay inside for now, so we aren’t tracking wet boots through the house. Besides, it’s getting late now, but I will show you tomorrow! They picked up some food and ate on paper plates, worked on unpacking a bit longer before everyone sat down to relax for the rest of the night. I continued to investigate the house thoroughly, as well as looking out each of the windows to make sure there were no intruders. One cannot be too careful. I could tell I was going to like this place; I am pretty sure they built this just for me. All the windows in the house were low, my height. I could see out from each and every window in the house, giving me full viewing access to the outside world. I took a deep breath; this was going to make my protection duty so much easier. The next morning, the small human showed me around outside. This place really was great! So many smells! We had previously lived on a farm with open fields on a dirt road, but here was quite different. We were on a busier road, but not too close. We were surrounded by woods, and there were trails for walking through them! The smells and sounds were much different than at the farm. We investigated the outdoors for quite some time, before we got cold and went back in. Hey Caroline, sweetie, I heard my human mom call out to the small human. Yes? She replied. Can you go out to the shop and tell your dad it's time for lunch? Yes, she said excitedly before darting to the side door. I went with her to make sure that she was safe. It did not take them long to unpack and put everything in its place. The smaller human unpacked and organized her toys in her room. Her mom would call out every so often, Caroline, found another one of your boxes… As time went on, we settled comfortably into the new house. The small human still had school to go to, so she was gone most of the day. I loved going along for the ride, to drop her off and pick her up from school. I haven’t felt quite as queasy lately, but I sure have sure been hungry. I am glad my human mom keeps that dish full. I can go grab a quick snack any time I need to, which seems to be quite often lately. I’ve always liked naps, but even with all the napping I still feel tired. My human mom keeps teasing me about my belly getting bigger and growing rounder by the day. She said she can’t wait to meet the babies. Some days I have no idea what she is talking about. Babies? What babies? I do not see or hear any babies of any sort. I inhale deeply and then exhale before going to lay down on the couch. Getting comfortable has been hard to do lately. My belly was getting bigger. I could no longer curl up comfortably in a ball. Laying flat on my side, worked for a little while, but even that too became uncomfortable. The only way I could find some comfort was to lay flat on my back with my belly exposed. Sometimes my belly feels weird, I can feel movement in there. I’m not sure what it is. Maybe the food my human mom dropped earlier, that I had eaten, is giving me some bad gas. Yes, that could be. Maybe my tummy is just upset. I groaned as I tried to get comfortable once again. I have been looking around the house a lot again lately, checking closets, looking under the beds, visiting my kennel and ruffling up my blankets. I climbed into the dirty laundry, but that wasn’t comfortable either. I left no hidey hole un-investigated. If I fit, I was going to look. I even tried looking under our back porch. Nothing looked suitable, but suitable for what? What exactly am I searching for? I didn’t know why I was looking, but I knew that I needed to. My body seemed to tell me that something was going to happen, and soon. My human mom draped a bunch of sheets over my nice big kennel, she also put new bedding in there. I watched her working on this, curious as to what she was doing with my stuff. When she had finished, I went over to investigate. I searched high and I searched low. I poked my nose in through the sheet and the rest of my body followed. Hmmm, I thought to myself. I like this, it is somewhat dark, and it’s cozy but not tight. Comfortable, of course, it’s my bed and bedding. This could work.
