Chapter Two: Those Awful Words

1521 Words
Daisy. Daisy girl. Being jarred from my slumber, I groggily opened my eyes, but I just lay there. Ohhh, a yawn escaped me. Having to be on duty 24/7 really is a tiring job. But a dog must do what a dog must do. Daisy… Come on Daisy. Ohhh, another yawn came over me. What does she want? I don’t smell any food, and we clearly aren’t going to town. Why is she bothering me? Daisy, bath time. I froze in my bed. Those awful words “Bath Time” are ringing in my ears. This is bad, this is so very bad. I thought to myself in a panic. Ok, I’m just going to lay here and pretend I did not hear her, and that I am sound asleep. With that, I settled deeper into the covers and closed my eyes. I could hear light footsteps as I lay unmoving buried in my blankets. Hmmm I thought to myself, maybe it’s working? Ooof, I groaned as I felt myself being lifted into the air. My eyes went wide, oh no, oh noooo, she found me. We made our way into the kitchen, where she set me into the sink, I looked at her, unblinking, my eyes big as saucers, I looked deep into her sole, staring at her with the best sad eyes I could make. I put one front paw up on the counter, hoping she would take the hint. She ignored me and continued. What on earth did I do to deserve such a punishment? She pulled out the shavers. They were quiet, as she started buzzing my hair off. I watched as my hair came off in clumps and dropped around my feet. I stood there still as a statue, my body slightly trembling. She worked on taking my hair off for quite a while. When she had finished shaving me, I felt n***d! I was in my birthday suit! How embarrassing, I thought to myself. The t*****e didn’t end there. She proceeded to trim my nails. Nails that I could have chewed off myself if she’d just let me. Finally, she had finished. I proceeded to climb up the side of the sink, preparing to make my escape. She laughed and said no, stay put and, to my agony, she said, we aren’t done! What on earth could be left? Hasn’t she tortured me enough for today? Then the water turned on. Oh, this is it, this end, I’m not going to make it. I shuddered at the thought. The warm water ran all over my body before she poured soap down my back. She then proceeded to rub and scrub all the dirt and smells from me. I couldn’t believe it; I just couldn’t believe it…… I had worked so hard collecting all of that in the first place. Does she not know the time and energy it took and how many places that I had to roll in, to collect all of that? Now with one bath, it’s all gone. Gone, just like that. I hung my head in despair. She continued to rinse me off as she said, now, doesn’t that feel much better, you look good, and you smell good too! “Your belly is getting plumper”, she commented. Just when I thought I couldn’t take anymore. I heard her say, “You’re such a good girl.” I lifted my head and my ears perked up. She draped a towel over me, drying my body and the insides of my ears. She talked excitedly as she dried me off. I couldn’t help but get a little excited too. It seemed like forever, but she finally set me on the ground. I shot out of the kitchen like a bullet, the wind tickling my newly shaved body. I ran to the living room and aimed for the carpet. I slid over it like a baseball player going to home base. I then rolled onto my back; groaning, snorting, and sneezing. I scratched my back and body all over the carpet, scooting along. Before I knew it, I was having a blast. This was fun and I felt good too. I survived, maybe it wasn’t so bad after all, but I don’t see why I need to bathe so often. I let out a sigh, then ran to the kitchen to get some breakfast. As I was eating, I wondered what time Frankie would be over to play today. I was excited about showing him my new haircut. I took a brief nap, and before I knew it, Frankie was here for our play date. I woke to the sound of Frankie running into the house. I stood up abruptly, slightly alarmed by the sudden commotion. Grrrrr, I said, before realizing that it was Frankie. I leapt forward to go and greet him, but he yelped and spun around in panic to get away from me. I stood there confused by what had just happened. Frankie peeked around the corner that he had darted behind. Staring at me, he let out a whine of excitement. When my tail started to wag, he perked up a bit and came out of his hiding place. He stepped towards me cautiously. I couldn’t help myself and I let out excited OOooOOoo, Ah, Ah, Rrrr. Frankie shot forward, perked up standing on his tippy-toes, he excitedly sniffed and looked me over. He hadn’t recognized me with my new haircut! I was so excited I took off running. I felt fast. I zoomed through the house, but as fast as I thought I was, Frankie raced up behind me, jumped over me and raced ahead. I still could not beat Frankie in a race, not even with a head start! We played the rest of the day, while my human mom was busy making a mess in the house. It was the strangest thing. She was taking all their things and putting them into boxes. I don’t know how she planned to use it again when it was stuffed in all those boxes. Later that evening, she took all the packed boxes and started loading them into a trailer and into the car. She packed it full! Where on earth was I supposed to sit?! Something was up; I just couldn’t put my paw on it. I’d have to worry about that later though. Right now I needed to take another nap. I have been feeling more tired than usual lately, and my tummy has been feeling a little upset. When my humans had their dinner that night, I was tired and took a nap instead of waiting to see if any food would fall. I got in my bed, adjusted my blankets to my satisfaction before lying down and falling into a deep sleep. When I woke up the next morning, I wasn’t hungry. My tummy still felt queasy, and I was still tired. I napped most of that day, while she packed more boxes. Strange, these humans are strange. I thought to myself. Ohhh, I let out a big yawn. Stretching, I got up and made my way to my water bowl. I still did not have an appetite, but I was thirsty, very thirsty. After drinking, I decided to ask to go outside. I needed to go potty too. The weather is getting much cooler outside. I don’t care for the cold, so I hurried up and did my business and went back inside to curl up on the couch. Hmm, no, that just won’t do. I got down and went to the other couch. It had a blanket on it. Yes, this will work. I laid back down and drifted off to sleep. Frankie had thinner hair than I did, and he despised the cold even more so. With the cooler weather and my humans so busy with rearranging all their things. I didn’t see Frankie as often. The smaller human sat down on the other couch and turned on the noise-making box. I jumped down and went over to snuggle next to her on the couch. She has no fur at all, I felt obligated to keep her warm. She kicked back, watching the noise box, her hand resting on my back and my chin resting on her leg. We stayed this way for quite some time. The house was starting to look quite empty; my humans had even started moving furniture into the trailer. I didn’t know what was going on, but this unusual behavior was starting to make me a little nervous. I spent most of my days observing the comings and goings of my humans and their belongings. I didn’t like it when they left me home in the house alone. I wanted to go with them. I was worried I would get left behind. I had a feeling we would be leaving our home soon. The cooler the weather got, the more excited my humans seemed to get. Odd behavior for them because they did not like being out in the cold any more than I did.
