My puppies were growing like weeds. They were fat, plump, and sassy. I really liked them but sometimes, I really needed a break too. It’s hard taking care of so many puppies. My human mom and the small child helped me by playing with them often, cleaning up after them and they were even starting to help feed them with delicious soft food and the best part is…. I get to clean up the leftovers!
They were still unbalanced, so it was quite fun to watch them. They would wobble around on their little chubby legs, with their fat little bellies dragging the ground. Their eyes were open now and with some mobility they wanted to explore. I saw my human mom pull out the medicine she called wormer. I watched from a safe distance as she tricked all my puppies into eating this horrible stuff.
She mixed it with something she called DYNE, by itself or with food. It was delicious, but she could not trick me into taking this medicine. Yuck, I watched as they unknowingly devoured it. I shivered at the thought. They were very messy eaters and were covered in a sticky mess when she was done. There that wasn’t so bad was it babies, she said to my puppies.
She held one of my puppies up to me. Here Daisy, clean it up. I sneezed to show my distaste, turned up my nose and walked away. Ya right, you won’t trick me, I thought to myself as I glared at her. You’re no help Daisy, she said to me. All right, babies, guess you get to have your first bath!
There were those awful words! I scrambled to get out of the room fast. My puppies were on their own. I was not going to risk having to get a bath myself as well. She put all of them in the kitchen sink at the same time. I heard the small human ask why. She replied, they are still too small to escape the sink, this is their first bath. So being surrounded by their brothers and sisters will help make this a little less scary for them.
I could hear their little whimpers coming from the kitchen. I inched forward to peek around the corner. I wanted to see what was going on, but I could not chance, going into the kitchen. Just then, the small human walked by with one of my puppies. It was bundled in a towel, and she was drying it off as she talked sweetly to it. Yip, I heard it say. I followed her to the couch where she sat with the puppy.
My human mom called from the kitchen. Come dry this one off please Caroline. The small human got up, gently placed the puppy back in its bed. Yip, Yap, Yip. It said as it looked around the kennel and realized there was no one else in there. I jumped in and curled up with my puppy to keep it company and keep it warm. I sniffed at my puppy. Well, it certainly smells much better, I thought to myself. One by one, my puppies joined me in the kennel.
I counted my puppies by touching my nose to each of them. Yep, sure enough, they were all back with me. Ash, Douglas, Cotton, Aspen, Tulip, Peach, Holly, Winter, and Maple. My two boys and seven girls. I had just started to nestle down for a nap with my puppies when my human mom came over to me. I wagged my tail thinking she was reaching in for a pet. Before I knew it, a syringe entered my mouth full of that gross medicine.
Huuk, huuk, I gagged. My human mom laughed and said, well Daisy, if you’d take your medicine mixed in with the yummy stuff, you wouldn’t have to take it directly from the syringe. This is important for your health; you need to take this to keep the worms away. Huuk, huuk, I gagged again. I glared at her with dismay.
My tummy felt queasy the rest of the day. Ugh, I groaned loudly. I got up, disrupting all my puppies from their nap. Yips and yaps of disapproval filled the air. I went to the door; I jumped up on it, placing my paw on the glass. OOooOOoo, ruff, I said to get my human mom's attention. She came over and let me out. I spent some time looking for the perfect spot to go potty.
When I came back in, the little human had one of my pups snuggled with her on the couch. I went over to investigate. Sure enough, it was Tulip. She spent the most time with her. Tulip was her favorite. I heard her tell her mom this, time and time again.
In the evening, my human mom, dad and the small human all held, snuggled, and played with the puppies. They gave each pup the opportunity to have snuggles with them. I laid on dad's legs watching. I couldn’t help but be jealous. Those pets and pats should all be for me. I thought to myself, sighing deeply.
As the puppies grew, my human mom boxed in a large room of the house. She put toys, boxes with doors and windows in them, a tunnel, obstacles, and all sorts of things on the floor for my puppies to climb through and over. They had a blast, the house was very loud with banging, crashing, barks, yips, and playful growls as they zoomed back and forth across the room.
It was winter out, and they were still so small, it was too cold outside for them, so their playtime was restricted to indoor play. I laid on top of the bench to watch them, they would run over and nip at me. My tail wagged happily, I wanted to play too, but it was very overwhelming with nine feisty puppies nipping and scratching at me. So, I stayed up above them where it was safe.
My human mom worked with my puppies, teaching them to use potty pads. They very seldom have accidents anymore. She was very proud of them, I could tell. I loved my babies very much, and I was very proud of them too. With each passing day, they grew bigger and got more playful.
My human mom took lots of pictures and videos. Some of my puppies ended up having their names changed when their new humans picked names for them. She started calling them by the new name instead of their litter call names. Douglas was renamed Sebastian. Ash was renamed Reggie. Cotton was renamed Fluffy. Aspen was renamed Pruitt. Maple was renamed Hazel. Tulip, Peach, Holly, and Winter got to keep their original litter call names.
There was snow on the ground, but the pups were big enough and the weather decent enough that my human mom decided it was time to let the pups explore the big outdoors. She made each of the pups a little sweater to help them stay warm. They all had a blast. Tulip was not overly crazy about it though, she had two sweaters on, and she was still cold. She kept going back to snuggle with my human mom. Eventually, she stuffed her inside of her sweater to help keep her warm, while the other pups played in the snow with the small human.
Fluffy, seemed to like the snow best of all. She was the bravest of the pups. She followed the small human way out into the yard through all the snow. The other pups stayed closer to the house. They were a little unsure of the big open spaces and the deep snow that seemed to give way between their little feet.
OOooOOoo I complained from behind the glass door. I wanted to be outside with my pups too. No, Daisy, you play too rough with the puppies out here. They don’t like getting smashed face-first into the snow. The little human said with her hands on her hips. OOooOoo, I tried again. No, she said.
After a while, all the pups found their way back to the porch and started to curl up with my human mom who was sitting with Tulip on the porch. They were all shivering. Help me get the puppies Caroline, I heard her say. They are tuckered out and cold, they have had enough of the outdoors for one day.
They brought them all back in and removed their little sweaters. They nestled down in their bed and napped the rest of the day. Some laid on their sides, others on their backs, some curled into balls. They slept and slept and slept. The adventures of the day had tuckered them out.
