CHAPTER TWO Petunia I turned to my husband, Logan, who was smiling at Wendy, and whispered, "You bastard. That's what you are." "I know. Stay cool. Let's not embarrass ourselves," he whispered back. Wendy spat out, "Surgeon, come and see my little boy." I smiled and said, "Maybe next time. I have an appointment with my husband; it's our anniversary today. Get well soon, Wendy." She frowned in annoyance. "Who celebrates a barren marriage? Nonsense." I looked at Logan and snorted. "Exactly. I just hope my loving husband shows up." With those last words, I escaped an impending drama. Had I stayed any longer, I would have killed this so-called Wendy who was trying to steal my last name. When I got home, I saw he had prepared dinner—just so I could serve the main course, his favorite. "That bastard. He prepared a special dinner even though he's a con man," I snapped. I sat down at the dining table and waited for my dear husband. An hour later, he arrived panting. "Hey, husband. There you are. How's your mistress?" I said, opening the first dish. My nose followed the aroma of the seasoned turkey. "Sit down, honey. Let's eat together." I said it, and Logan sat down. His reaction was so calm, as if he hadn't done anything wrong. He took out the cutlery and began carving the large turkey in front of him. "I should have known you were the specialist surgeon. You were meant to meet Wendy anyway." "She's having some complications and could lose the baby if she doesn't get proper treatment," I replied. I stopped eating and stared at him as I watched him cut the turkey into smaller pieces. “Are you the father?” I asked. He spat. “Yes.” He was about to take a bite when I said calmly and coldly, "The turkey might be poisoned. I prepared it myself." "You won't kill me, I know that." I grinned. "Nice try, Salinger. When are you going to tell your mistress you have a wife?" "Soon. After I introduce her to Father." "I hope he doesn't shoot her." "He won't when he sees his grandson." "The one in her belly?" I asked, and he shook his head in response—no. I was confused. "Wait, her 12-year-old son is yours too? You started cheating right after our wedding? You've got some nerve. People think you're the sweetest, most innocent husband, but you're the worst." "I know. That's why you're still with me. I love you," he said. I nodded. "That's right." I stood up and said, "Happy 14th wedding anniversary, Logan." He smiled, stood up, came closer to me, took my hands, and led me upstairs to our room. The light was blinding. The room was decorated with flowers and balloons. He went to the closet and brought me a small box. I opened it and saw a gold necklace. "If you think this will make me forgive you, then I'm happy to tell you: You win. I've always wanted this. Thank you," I said, and hugged him. I leaned in for a kiss. He was the sweetest, even though he was a cheat. Later, as I was changing into my nightgown, Logan appeared beside me—shirtless. "When did you find out you had a son?" I asked. “A year ago. When I drove back to the countryside because someone told me they were trying to tear down the building,” he said. “It’s not your fault. It’s mine. I never wanted a child and was focused on my career. I didn’t know you wanted a child so desperately,” I said, blaming myself. He smiled warmly. “No, Pet, don’t say that. It’s not your fault. I cheated on you.” “You cheat every year,” I said sharply. “Yes…” “Please tell me you at least had a DNA test done,” I asked. “I’m not stupid. Of course I did. How else would I have known Austin was my son?” he asked. “Oh… wait, that’s our dog’s name,” I said. He thought about it for a moment. “Hmm, right.” I snorted and shook my head in disappointment. “I have surgery tomorrow at 10 a.m. Get Wendy to meet Dad soon, at least before his 70th birthday, which is in two days.” “Sure. Thanks, Pet.” He said it and kissed my forehead. I smiled, got into bed, and tried to sleep. The next morning, I received a call from the surgeon who was seeing Wendy. “Hello, sir,” I said. “Hello Dr. Salinger. Sorry to call you this morning, but something urgent has happened.” “What is it?” I asked. He replied, “Mrs. Wendy Bright said she’d like to see you.” “See me? I can’t. I have surgery at 10 a.m. I can’t promise anything. Give her my regards.” I said this and hung up. I snorted. “Now she wants to see me?” “Who was that?” Logan asked. A towel was hung around his neck, his wet hair partially obscured his eyes, and another towel was tied around his waist. You could see his defined abs. “What a perfect body,” I whispered. “What?” he said, trying to guess what I had said. “That was your lover. She asked for one last meeting with me,” I said, jumping out of bed. “But it won’t be her last. I mean, she’ll see you more often,” he said. “That’s pretty annoying, but I can handle it,” I said, smiling. He paused for a moment, then suddenly said, “I’ve arranged for her to meet Father on his birthday.” Surprised, I asked, “On his birthday? Lolo, are you trying to get Father to bury you alive?” “No. Father was busy, and this is the only date that works. The whole family will be there,” he said, looking down at the floor. “Well, if you think it’s the right thing to do, then so be it. I’ll always support you, you know that,” I said, giving him a warm smile. “But there’s a problem, Pet,” he said. I spat out, “What?” “The whole family will be there,” he said, his face serious. : ... “This is going to be a complicated game, Lolo, I know. But we can do this—together,” I said. I chuckled. “Make sure you wear a bulletproof vest,” I said, moving closer to him and stroking his back. “You can do this, Mr. Logan Salinger.” I turned and went into the bathroom. My expression darkened, filled with anger and rage. I grabbed my phone and texted my sister, Mia. [: I need to get rid of someone.] She replied immediately. [MIA: I’m always here to help. Do you need a weapon?] “Poison would be enough.”
