Great Job

Hours later, Lena’s head was spinning. Numbers. Contracts. Reports. Her eyes burned from staring at the screen. Her stomach growled. She hadn’t eaten. Hadn’t rested. Hadn’t stopped. Because failure wasn’t an option. Not today. Not in front of him. She glanced at the clock. 6:47 PM. Almost everyone had left. Except— Him. Of course. Ethan sat in his office, jacket off, sleeves rolled up, completely focused. Like he lived here. Like this was all that mattered. Lena hesitated. Then stood up, gathering the files. Her legs felt like jelly as she walked toward his office. She knocked lightly. “Come in.” She stepped inside. Placed the files on his desk. “I’m done.” Ethan looked up slowly. Then at the stack. Then back at her. “And?” “I reviewed everything,” she said. “There are inconsistencies in the third and fifth reports. The numbers don’t match the projections.” Silence. He studied her. Long. Hard. Like he was trying to figure something out. Then he reached for the files, flipping through them quickly. His expression didn’t change. But the air did. Shifted. “You caught that?” he asked. “Yes.” Another pause. Then— A quiet, almost reluctant: “Impressive.” Lena blinked. Wait… did he just—? But before she could react— He closed the file. “Don’t let it get to your head.” And just like that— The moment was gone. Lena exhaled slowly. “Is that all, sir?” Ethan held her gaze. For a second too long. “No,” he said. Her heart skipped. “Tomorrow,” he continued, “you’ll come in earlier.” “How early?” “Seven.” Her eyes widened. “That’s—” “Do you have a problem with that?” She hesitated. Then shook her head. “No.” “Good.” She turned to leave— “Miss Scott.” She paused. “Yes?” Ethan’s voice dropped slightly. “Try not to be late.” A beat. Then she smirked faintly. “No promises.” And this time— She didn’t miss it. The slight curve of his lips as she walked out. She knew she was in for a long ride with this boss of hers.
