Chapter 5: The Weight of Truth
The next morning, I wake up with the faintest throb in my head. It's not a headache exactly—more like the aftermath of a long, emotional night. My eyes are puffy from crying, but I force myself to sit up, to face the day. I can’t hide from it anymore.
I glance at the phone beside me on the nightstand, the screen still glowing from last night’s messages. Zachary’s last text is unread, staring back at me like an unanswered question. I hesitate for a moment before unlocking the phone. His words are simple, but they send a ripple through me:
“We need to talk. Soon.”
I sigh, dropping the phone onto the bed. My mind is a whirlwind of thoughts. I don’t know what to think. I don’t know what to feel. All I know is that things are shifting around me—faster than I can process—and I’m not sure how to keep up.
I drag myself out of bed, and as I make my way to the kitchen, the weight of the day presses down on me. The betrayal. The new, unsettling bond I’m feeling with Zachary. And Freddie. My thoughts keep circling back to him. To the mess we made, the way he betrayed me. I can’t just forget it. But I also can’t forget the way his voice broke when he called me last night, begging me to hear him out.
I pour myself a cup of coffee, trying to steady my nerves. The quiet of the apartment makes everything feel more intense, the silence amplifying the chaos in my mind. I think about calling my best friend, Claire. She’s always been the one I turn to when things get complicated. But then I remember... she’s away for a work trip. It’s just me and the mess I’ve gotten myself into.
The doorbell rings, and I freeze. My heart skips a beat. I don’t need to check the peephole to know who it is.
I open the door to find Zachary standing there, his tall frame filling the doorway. His presence is overwhelming, but there’s a softness in his eyes that I wasn’t expecting. He doesn’t speak immediately, but the tension in the air is undeniable. It’s like he’s waiting for me to let him in, both physically and emotionally.
I stand there for a moment, unsure of what to do, before finally stepping aside and letting him in. “What are you doing here?” I ask, my voice shaky.
Zachary steps inside, closing the door behind him gently. “We need to talk,” he says again, his tone more urgent this time. “I told you that I’d give you space, but I can’t stand by and watch you spiral. You need to understand what’s happening. What you’re feeling.”
I try to shake the fog in my brain. “I don’t need you to explain anything. I’ve already made up my mind. I can’t—”
“You can’t run from this, Lydia,” he interrupts, his voice surprisingly soft, yet firm. “You feel it too. The pull between us. The bond.”
I feel my heart skip, but I don’t let him see the effect his words have on me. “No. I don’t feel anything,” I lie. I want to believe it. I want to believe I’m not drawn to him, not pulled into his world. But the truth is, I don’t know what I’m feeling. It’s all too much.
Zachary’s gaze never wavers from mine. “You’re lying to yourself, Lydia. You feel it. And deep down, you know it. You don’t have to understand it all at once, but you can’t deny it. Not anymore.”
“I don’t want any of this,” I whisper, stepping away from him, trying to put space between us. But no matter how far I step back, I still feel him there—his presence, his energy. It’s like a constant hum at the edge of my consciousness, something I can’t escape.
Zachary takes a step closer. “I know this is overwhelming, but you’re not alone in this. I’m here, Lydia. I won’t force you, but I can’t walk away from you either. We’re connected. In ways you can’t understand right now.”
“Why me?” I ask, my voice breaking. “Why am I the one you’re trying to bring into your world? I don’t even know you.”
His face softens, and for a moment, I see something more than the Alpha, the powerful leader he’s shown me so far. I see the man underneath it all—the man who’s hurting too. “I didn’t ask for this either. I didn’t ask for the bond, for the connection. It wasn’t something I could control. But I can’t ignore it. And I won’t let you push me away without at least trying to help you understand it.”
I look away, my chest tightening. “I don’t want to be part of this... pack... or whatever it is you’re asking me to be part of. I have my own life. I have my own plans.” I take a deep breath, trying to steady myself. “And Freddie… he’s the one I thought I’d be with. I don’t know what’s happening between us anymore, but I can’t just ignore everything I thought we had.”
Zachary watches me for a long moment, his expression unreadable. Then he says, “Freddie... he isn’t who you think he is, Lydia. He’s hiding something. Something you don’t know about.”
My heart skips a beat. “What do you mean?”
Zachary steps closer, his voice dropping to a low, intense whisper. “Freddie’s not just a man. He’s part of this world. The world I’m from. The world you’re now a part of, whether you want to be or not.”
I shake my head, my breath catching. “You’re saying Freddie’s... one of you? A werewolf?”
Zachary nods, his gaze never leaving mine. “Yes. He’s been hiding it from you. I don’t know why he’s done it, but I do know that he’s dangerous. And I don’t trust him. He’s a threat to you, Lydia.”
The words hit me like a punch to the gut. I feel dizzy, like the world is spinning around me. Freddie... a werewolf? But he never showed any signs of it. I would’ve noticed, wouldn’t I?
Zachary takes another step forward, his tone now more urgent. “Lydia, I don’t want to scare you. I’m not telling you this to push you further away. I’m telling you because you need to know the truth. Freddie... he’s been lying to you. And he’s using you. I don’t know what his plans are, but I know he’s involved in something bigger than you realize.”
I can’t process this. It feels like my brain is refusing to accept what he’s saying. “I don’t believe you,” I say, but even as the words leave my mouth, I’m not so sure.
Zachary’s eyes soften. “I don’t expect you to believe me, Lydia. But I’m asking you to trust me. Trust that I’m not here to hurt you. I’m here to protect you. From him.”
My hands tremble, and I wrap my arms around myself, trying to calm the storm inside me. “I need time to think. I can’t... I can’t just... accept this.”
“I know,” he says gently, stepping back. “I’m not asking you to accept anything right now. But I am asking you to consider that Freddie’s not who you think he is. And I’m not going anywhere. When you’re ready to hear the truth, I’ll be here.”
I don’t respond. I just stand there, my mind racing. The world feels like it’s spinning out of control, and I don’t know how to stop it.
Zachary leaves quietly, the door clicking softly behind him. I stand in the middle of the room, my body frozen, my heart heavy with the weight of everything I’ve just learned.
Freddie isn’t who I thought he was. He’s part of a world I never knew existed. And Zachary, the mysterious man who claims to be my mate, is the only one who’s trying to protect me from him.
I don’t know what to believe anymore.
But one thing’s certain: my life is never going to be the same.
