Chapter 2: The Alpha's Claim I blink, trying to process what just happened. The stranger, the man sitting across from me, stands up, his imposing presence filling the small café. The look in his eyes, sharp and unwavering, tells me that this is no ordinary man. And when he calls himself the Alpha—well, it only adds to the confusion. Freddie is still standing behind me, frozen, his expression a mix of anger and disbelief. "What the hell is going on here, Lydia?" he snaps, his voice harsh. "Who is this guy?" I don’t even know how to respond. My mouth is dry, and my thoughts are spinning. This man—Zachary, as I’ll come to learn—seems to have a kind of power that I can’t quite understand. It’s not just his physical presence, though that’s certainly part of it. It’s the way he looks at Freddie, the way he stands between us, like he’s ready to tear him apart if necessary. I look up at him, my heart still racing from the encounter with Freddie, and now from the situation I find myself in. "You’re... the Alpha?" I ask, my voice shaking slightly, unsure if I’m just imagining things. Zachary doesn’t answer right away. Instead, he keeps his gaze locked on Freddie, his jaw tight with barely contained tension. The tension in the air is palpable. It's like a storm is about to break, but neither of the men is moving. "Is this some kind of joke?" Freddie demands, his voice rising. "Are you in on this, Lydia? What’s going on?" I feel the sting of betrayal all over again, but there’s no time to process it. I turn toward Zachary, trying to gather my thoughts, but they feel fragmented, like a puzzle I can’t quite put together. "Why are you here?" I ask him, my voice trembling more than I’d like. He finally looks at me, his silver-gray eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that makes my breath hitch. "I’m here because you’re mine now," he says, his voice low and steady, as if he’s speaking the truth in a way that I can’t deny. My heart stops. "What?" I whisper, almost afraid to hear it. Zachary steps closer to me, his movements smooth and deliberate, like a predator closing in on its prey. "You’re my mate," he says, as if that explains everything. "And I’m not going to let anyone take you away from me." I blink, trying to make sense of his words. "Mate? What are you talking about?" Freddie scoffs from behind me. "Lydia, don’t listen to him. This guy is crazy. He’s probably just trying to mess with you because I—" He cuts off, realizing he’s about to say too much. I glance back at Freddie, confusion swirling in my chest. His presence feels so familiar, but I can’t shake the feeling that something is off. I thought I knew him. I thought I knew everything about our relationship. But this? This is something else entirely. "I don’t know who you are," I say to Zachary, my voice trembling with uncertainty. "But I know you’re lying about all of this. I’m not—" Zachary’s gaze hardens, and before I can finish my sentence, he interrupts me. "You don’t have to understand it all right now," he says, his tone cutting through the noise of my thoughts. "All you need to know is that you’re mine. And I’m not letting you go. Not now, not ever." I swallow hard, my throat tight. "But I don’t even know you." His lips curl into a half-smile, as though he finds this situation amusing. "You will," he replies softly, "soon enough." Freddie steps forward, his face twisted with anger. "This is insane," he mutters. "Lydia, don’t let him—" Before he can say anything else, Zachary turns to him, his posture shifting in a way that makes Freddie pause. "You should leave," Zachary says, his voice colder now, and for the first time, I notice the subtle shift in the atmosphere. It’s like the temperature in the room drops a few degrees. Freddie falters, but only for a second. "I’m not going anywhere," he snarls. "You can’t just waltz in here and—" "Leave. Now," Zachary repeats, his voice low but full of authority. There’s something in his words that makes Freddie take a step back, his eyes wide, the defiance leaving his posture for the briefest of moments. Freddie looks at me one last time, his expression a mix of rage and desperation. "You’ll regret this, Lydia," he spits, his voice shaking with barely contained fury. "I swear you will." I watch him walk away, his figure retreating into the crowded street outside. His words echo in my mind, but they feel empty now, meaningless. I’ve just witnessed something that shakes me to my core, and yet, the man I thought I knew, the man I thought I would spend the rest of my life with, is gone. I’m left standing there, staring at the spot where he just was, trying to make sense of the sudden shift in my world. Zachary’s presence looms behind me, heavy and all-consuming. He steps into my line of sight, his eyes still locked onto mine, and I feel the pull of his gaze like a magnetic force I can’t resist. "What is happening?" I murmur, mostly to myself, my mind spinning. "Who are you, really?" Zachary pauses for a moment, considering my question. Then, in a voice that feels like it belongs to a world I don’t understand, he answers. "My name is Zachary," he says slowly, as if explaining something simple. "And I’m the Alpha of the Midnight Fang Pack. I was watching over you long before you even knew who I was." His words hang in the air, thick with meaning, but I can’t seem to process them. "The Alpha?" I repeat, still trying to make sense of it. "The Alpha of... a pack? What does that even mean?" Zachary doesn’t seem in a rush to explain. Instead, he lets out a low breath and leans back in his chair, the tension in his muscles easing, but there’s still something dangerously calm about him. "It means that I’m the leader of a werewolf pack," he says, his gaze unwavering. "And it means that you, Lydia, are my mate." I stare at him, utterly speechless. The words "werewolf" and "mate" bounce around in my head, but I can’t connect them to anything real. My mind refuses to accept this new reality. "I... I don’t understand," I whisper, barely able to form the words. "None of this makes sense." Zachary leans forward, his eyes softening slightly, though there’s still an edge of authority in his posture. "I know it’s a lot to take in," he says gently. "But it’s the truth. You’re connected to me in ways you can’t yet understand. And I’m not going to let anyone hurt you. Not Freddie, not anyone." I shake my head, the confusion only deepening. "But I don’t know you. How can I trust you?" Zachary doesn’t immediately answer, his eyes studying me with an intensity that feels like he’s looking into my soul. Finally, he stands, walking slowly to the window, as if contemplating something far beyond this moment. "You will learn to trust me," he says quietly, his voice steady, "because I’ll show you that you can. And because, whether you like it or not, I’m your future now." The weight of his words settles on me, and I feel the tension in my chest tighten once again. I’ve just lost everything I thought I knew, and now I’m facing something completely unknown. A world of wolves, of power, of fate that seems beyond my control. And Zachary, this man who calls himself the Alpha, says I have no choice but to accept it. "I didn’t ask for this," I say, my voice barely above a whisper, a plea that feels empty. "I didn’t ask for any of this." Zachary turns to face me, his eyes softening just slightly. "I know," he says gently, but there’s a firmness to his tone. "But this is the way it is. You don’t have to understand it now, Lydia. All you have to do is trust me." I swallow hard, feeling a knot of fear tighten in my stomach. There’s no going back from this. Whatever this is—whatever he is—it’s already too late. My life is no longer my own. And I have a feeling this is just the beginning of something much darker than I could ever have imagined.
