Chapter 3: The Storm Within
I can’t breathe.
Zachary’s words hang in the air, suffocating me, and I find myself swaying slightly on my feet. My mind races, trying to catch up to what he just told me. He’s an Alpha. A werewolf. And apparently, I’m his “mate.”
I take a step back, shaking my head. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I whisper, my voice barely audible. “Werewolves? Mates? This... this doesn’t make sense.”
Zachary watches me closely, his silver-gray eyes never leaving mine. He doesn’t seem surprised by my reaction, almost like he was expecting this kind of response. The air between us is heavy, thick with tension, and for the first time since he walked into that café, I feel completely out of my depth.
“Look, I know this is a lot to take in,” Zachary says calmly, his voice low and soothing, though there’s an underlying power in his tone that makes it impossible to ignore. “But I’m not lying. I’m the Alpha of the Midnight Fang Pack, and you—Lydia—are my mate. There’s no escaping it.”
I blink, trying to keep the panic from rising in my chest. “But I don’t even know you! I’ve never even heard of this ‘Midnight Fang Pack.’” My voice cracks slightly, the words slipping out of me before I can stop them. “I’ve never even believed in any of this. Werewolves? It sounds like some kind of fairytale.”
Zachary tilts his head, his expression softening, but the intensity in his gaze never falters. “I understand. It’s a lot to process. But it’s real, Lydia. And I’m not going anywhere.”
I shake my head again, my thoughts spiraling. Everything I thought I knew, everything that made sense, is crumbling around me. Freddie—my boyfriend of three years—just kissed his assistant, and now I’m being told that I’m somehow destined for a life I never asked for, with a man I barely know, who claims to be a werewolf Alpha.
My heart aches for Freddie, for the betrayal I feel deep in my chest. The way he looked at me when he left, the anger and hurt in his eyes—it’s almost too much to bear. But then, here’s Zachary, a stranger, offering me a future I never imagined. A future that feels both terrifying and strangely inevitable.
“What do you want from me?” I ask, my voice more steady than I feel. I can’t help it—I need to understand what’s going on.
Zachary takes a step closer, his gaze never leaving mine. His presence is overwhelming, like a storm waiting to break. “I want you to accept it, Lydia. Accept us. Accept me.”
I blink, my heart racing. “Us? You mean me and... you? As... mates?”
His lips twitch, a small, almost imperceptible smile crossing his face. “Yes. But it’s not just about me and you, Lydia. It’s about the pack. Our pack. You’re part of something bigger now. I’m not just claiming you for myself—I’m claiming you for the Midnight Fang Pack.”
I stare at him, my mouth dry. “I don’t want any part of this. I just want a normal life.”
Zachary steps forward again, closing the space between us. “This is your life now,” he says softly, but his voice carries a weight of finality. “You can’t change it, no matter how hard you try. You belong with me. You belong with the pack.”
I feel a chill race down my spine. I want to scream, to argue, to push him away, but somehow, his presence holds me in place. There’s a force around him, an energy I can’t explain, that makes it hard to think clearly. It’s like he’s magnetized, and I’m drawn to him whether I like it or not.
“Please,” I say, my voice shaking now. “I can’t—” I can’t even finish the sentence. I can’t accept this. I can’t just throw away everything I’ve known. Freddie, the life I thought I was building. It’s all gone now, and this man, this... Alpha, is standing in front of me, telling me that my life is now his to control.
Zachary doesn’t seem to be fazed by my panic. Instead, he reaches out slowly, his hand hovering just inches from mine. “I know this is hard,” he says quietly, his voice low and reassuring. “But you’re not alone in this. I’ll help you through it.”
I pull my hand away, stepping back, feeling the weight of the room pressing down on me. “I don’t want your help. I don’t want any of this!”
I turn, my mind a whirlwind of confusion and betrayal, and I feel tears welling up in my eyes. But before I can take another step, I feel a hand on my shoulder. My heart skips a beat, and I spin around to face Zachary once more.
“Lydia,” he says, his voice softer now, almost tender. “You don’t have to face this alone. I’ll protect you. I’ll keep you safe.”
I can’t breathe. I don’t know why, but his words... they feel real. He feels real. I want to push him away, to tell him to leave me alone, but deep down, something in me doesn’t want to let go. I feel torn, pulled in two different directions.
“Please,” I whisper, my voice cracking. “Just let me think. Let me breathe.”
Zachary watches me, his expression unreadable for a moment. Then he nods, taking a step back, though his gaze never wavers. “I’ll give you time, Lydia. But you’ll come to me when you’re ready. You’ll come to me because you have to. You have no choice.”
I open my mouth to argue, but the words stick in my throat. He’s right. I don’t know why, but deep down, I feel like he’s telling the truth. And that scares me more than anything else.
“Fine,” I say finally, my voice barely above a whisper. “I’ll come to you. But I don’t know if I can accept this. I don’t know if I can be... your mate.”
Zachary doesn’t smile, but his eyes soften slightly, as if he knows something I don’t. “You will, Lydia. You will.”
I turn and walk away before I can say anything more. My legs feel weak beneath me, my mind still trying to catch up with everything that’s just happened. The café is quiet, almost too quiet, as I step outside into the cold air. I feel like I’m suffocating, drowning in the weight of it all.
But the questions, the confusion, the uncertainty—they’re all there, gnawing at me like a constant ache. Freddie. Zachary. The pack. The mate bond. How can I possibly accept this? How can I just throw away everything I’ve ever known for something that feels like a nightmare?
I don’t have the answers. But I know one thing for sure—I’m not ready to face this world, this new reality, on my own. Zachary might be dangerous, but I can’t deny that he’s also everything I never thought I needed. And the thought of being without him... it scares me more than I want to admit.
My heart beats faster as I walk down the street, lost in my thoughts, when my phone buzzes in my pocket. I pull it out, my hands trembling as I see the name on the screen.
It’s Freddie.
For a moment, I just stare at the screen, my heart twisting in my chest. Part of me wants to pick up, to hear his voice, to understand why he did what he did. But another part of me—the part that feels betrayed, the part that wants to escape everything—wants to throw the phone away and forget he ever existed.
With trembling fingers, I swipe to answer.
“Lydia?” His voice cracks, and I can hear the desperation in it. “Lydia, please... I—I’m sorry. I was wrong. Please just—please don’t leave me.”
I close my eyes, trying to steady my breath, but I can’t do it. I can’t pretend anymore.
“I can’t,” I whisper, my voice barely audible. “I can’t be with you anymore, Freddie. I can’t trust you.”
And before he can say another word, I hang up.
The silence that follows is deafening, and as I stand there, staring at the phone in my hand, I feel the weight of my decision. Freddie is gone. And Zachary—he’s waiting.
I don’t know if I’m ready for any of this. But one thing is clear: My life will never be the same again.
