Chapter 10 Ashlyn’s POV The car screeched to a stop. Blake—if I heard the name right—opened the door, and I stepped out like someone sleepwalking through smoke. Where am I? A large house. No—a mansion. Secluded. Wrapped in trees, metal gates, and a silence too heavy for comfort. The kind of silence that made your heartbeat louder. He motioned me inside. I followed. Not because I trusted him. But because I didn’t know who to trust anymore. My head was spinning. The shootout. The masked man who held me like I was something fragile. Something precious. The way he said my name—Ash. Like it was carved into his soul. But his face… I hadn’t seen it. Not really. Just that mask. That voice. That touch. And still— Still my heart thudded like it knew him. Like it recognized something even my mind couldn’t name. Who are you? I didn’t even realize Blake had brought me to a room until I saw the bed. A glass of water on the side table. Soft lights. Neutral colors. Safe. I dropped onto the mattress. My fingers trembled as I took a sip, but it wasn’t fear. It was something else. A longing I couldn’t explain. A pull I didn’t understand. Like some thread was being stitched back into place inside me, one I never realized was torn. And his voice... "Stay with me, Ash." I blinked hard. No one had called me that. Not like that. Not like they knew it. And then the impossible question floated in— What if… he was never Asher? I stood abruptly. My legs wobbled, but I made it to the mirror. Same reflection. Same girl. But my eyes were different. Like they’d seen something they weren’t meant to. Felt something they were never supposed to feel again. I touched my lips. My skin still carried the memory of his arms around me. Why did it feel like I’d been there before? Why did it feel like he knew me in ways no one else ever had? And then… a voice in my head whispered— "Ryder." That name. That cursed, hidden name I murmured in my sleep. Deep in my chest, something stirred. Something buried beneath years of confusion and unanswered questions. A name the world never told me— I turned toward the door. I needed answers. And somehow, I knew— He was the only one who could give them to me. I turned toward the door… ready to chase the ghost who made my heart race like it had before— But something tugged me back. A shift. A thud. Soft. Almost like a sigh from the past. I glanced down near the bedside drawer. The lower compartment had popped open slightly—just enough to reveal the worn corner of a leather-bound book. A diary. Old. Frayed edges. Spine nearly split. It didn’t feel like coincidence. Something told me… this was meant to be found. I dropped to my knees and pulled it free. My hands trembled around it—dust clinging to my fingers like secrets unwilling to part. The first page held no name. Just one scribbled sentence: “If love had a face, it would’ve been hers. But I wore someone else’s.” My breath stilled. That handwriting—sharp yet beautiful. Familiar and haunting. I flipped through the pages, faster now. And there it was. All of it. Memories. Emotions. Pain spilled in ink and scratches. Ryder. Not Asher. Ryder. My heart stuttered. “She loved flowers. I loved fire. But the moment she touched me—I bloomed too.” “Every second Asher lived my life, I was locked in a hospital bed—knowing she was smiling at someone who wasn’t me.” “When I came back, I saw her in his arms… but her eyes… they were searching. Always searching. For me.” Tears blurred the words, but I kept reading. My fingers gripped the pages like they were oxygen. Like this—finally—was the truth I never knew I was seeking. “I was never meant to be seen. My family made sure of it. They gave Asher the empire, the name, the public. I became the blade in the shadows. The one they unleashed when peace failed.” “But I would’ve given it all up… just to hear her say my name once. Ryder. Not Asher. Just me.” A broken sound left my throat. I didn’t know if it was a sob or a breath I’d been holding for years. It all made sense now. Why nothing ever felt whole with Asher. Why there was always a space between our hands, our hearts—one I couldn’t cross. Because he wasn’t the man I’d loved. He never was. It was always Ryder. The shadow I had chased in my dreams, the warmth I felt in the presence of a stranger, the fire that pulled me without mercy. And he… he was always far away from me. At a distant. Wearing a mask. I closed the diary slowly. My reflection in the mirror looked the same—but something inside had shifted. Now I knew. Now I remembered. I didn’t need answers anymore. I just needed him. And this time? I wasn’t letting him disappear again.
