Chapter 4: The Escape

1004 Words
The shrill ringtone sliced through the silence of the cemetery like a knife. For one terrifying second, Maya forgot how to breathe. Her eyes widened. Her blood ran cold. "No..." she whispered. The realization hit her instantly. Her phone. She had forgotten it was still hidden inside her jacket. The sound continued echoing between the graves, bouncing off the marble stones and exposing the one thing she had been trying desperately to hide. That she was there. That she was alive. One of the bodyguards turned sharply toward the sound. "Did you hear that?" The second man scanned the darkness. "There!" He pointed toward the rows of marble headstones. "Someone is hiding there." Maya pressed herself harder against the monument, praying that the stone could somehow make her invisible. Her mind raced. She couldn't be found. Not now. Not after everything she had discovered. The older man remained completely still. Unlike the others, he showed no panic. No surprise. Only control. His cold eyes moved slowly across the cemetery, studying every corner as if he already knew someone was watching. "Find them," he ordered. His voice was calm. Almost emotionless. "Now." The bodyguards immediately moved. Their shoes crushed against the wet ground as they rushed through the cemetery. Maya's breathing became shallow. She knew she couldn't stay. The ringtone eventually stopped, but the damage had already been done. They knew someone was here. They knew someone had been listening. And if they found her... There would be no second chance. Keeping her body low, Maya slipped away from the monument and moved between the graves. She used the tall stone structures as cover, carefully avoiding the open spaces where she could easily be seen. Every movement felt dangerous. Every sound felt too loud. Then a flashlight beam swept across the ground only a few meters away. Maya froze. The light moved slowly over the wet grass. Closer. Closer. Her heart pounded against her chest. "There!" One of the guards shouted. Maya's entire body went tense. Had they found her? Was this the end? But then the flashlight moved away. No. They had only noticed a shadow. A small movement. A mistake. Maya didn't wait for another chance. She turned and ran. Her shoes slipped against the wet grass as she rushed between the graves. The rain had started falling again, making every step more difficult. She nearly fell but caught herself against an old stone cross. Behind her, footsteps grew louder. "Stop!" She didn't look back. Looking back would only slow her down. She pushed herself harder, running toward the far end of the cemetery where an abandoned maintenance area sat beside the rusted iron fence. An old brick shed stood there, forgotten and covered in moss. The wooden door was slightly open. Maya didn't think. She rushed inside and carefully pulled the door shut behind her. Darkness surrounded her. The smell of old wood and dust filled the small room. She pressed her back against the wall, covering her mouth with her hand to stop her breathing from giving her away. Outside... Footsteps approached. "They couldn't have gone far." "Search everywhere." A flashlight moved across the cracks in the old wooden walls. A thin line of light passed over Maya's face. She closed her eyes. If they opened that door... It would all be over. She could hear her own heartbeat. Seconds passed. Then more seconds. Time felt frozen. The handle of the shed door didn't move. Finally, the voices began to fade. "They must have escaped through the back gate." "Let's move." The footsteps grew quieter. Then disappeared completely. Maya didn't move. Not yet. She had learned one thing that night. Silence did not always mean safety. She waited. One minute. Two minutes. Three. Only after she was certain the cemetery had become completely quiet did she slowly open the door. Cold rain touched her face immediately. She stepped outside. The cemetery was empty. The old man was gone. Ethan was gone. The bodyguards were gone. Maya stood there alone, trembling from the cold, fear, and exhaustion. But she was alive. For now. She reached into her jacket to turn off her phone before it betrayed her again. But instead of finding her phone... Her fingers touched something hard. Something that wasn't supposed to be there. Confused, she pulled it out. A small brass key rested in her palm. It was old and scratched, with signs that it had been hidden away for years. A faded paper tag was tied around it with a thin piece of string. Written on the tag were three numbers. 317 Maya stared at it. Her confusion grew. "I've never seen this before," she whispered. She turned the key over in her hand, studying every detail. Then suddenly... A memory broke through the fog in her mind. Two weeks before the accident. She remembered walking into Ethan's home office unexpectedly. He had been standing near his desk. The moment he saw her, he had reacted strangely. Too quickly. He had closed a drawer and locked it before she could see inside. But for a brief second... She had seen something. A brass key. A faded tag. Three numbers. 317. The same key. The same numbers. The same strange feeling that something had been hidden from her. Back then, she hadn't thought much about it. She had trusted Ethan. She had believed every marriage had secrets, and some things were better left alone. But now... Everything was different. The key felt heavier in her hand. Like it carried answers. Like it was connected to the truth everyone was trying to hide from her. She looked around the empty cemetery. The key had not been there before. Someone had placed it there. But who? And why? Maya closed her fingers tightly around it. For the first time since waking up, she felt something other than fear. She felt determination. Because somewhere behind that tiny brass key was a secret. And she was going to find out what it unlocked.
