Chapter 6: The First Truth

"We need to talk." Maya's heart stopped for a moment. The words sent a wave of fear through her body. Slowly, she turned around. The station security officer stood only a few steps away, watching her carefully. His expression was serious, but impossible to read. For a brief moment, neither of them spoke. The busy railway station continued moving around them. People walked past. Announcements echoed through the speakers. Luggage wheels rolled across the floor. But Maya heard none of it. All she could hear was her own heartbeat. Had he recognized her? Had someone already discovered that Maya Williams was alive? Had the people searching for her finally found her? Her fingers tightened around the envelope. The officer's eyes moved toward the open locker. "Is that locker yours?" he asked. Maya forced herself to remain calm. She couldn't panic. Not here. Not in front of everyone. "...Yes," she replied quietly. The officer looked at the locker number. Then back at her. "We've been trying to contact the owner of Locker 317 for over a month." Maya frowned. "A month?" The officer nodded. "The rental period expired weeks ago. We were about to clear out the contents and make the locker available again." A small wave of relief passed through her. He wasn't talking about her. He wasn't asking why a dead woman was standing in front of him. He was only talking about the locker. The locker that somehow held the secrets of her past. "I'm sorry," Maya said, lowering her voice. "I've... been away." The officer studied her face for a few seconds. Maya wondered if he noticed something strange about her. If he saw the fear she was desperately trying to hide. But eventually, he only sighed. "Just make sure you empty it today." He turned and walked away, disappearing into the crowd. Maya remained still. Only after he was gone did she finally release the breath she had been holding. Her legs felt weak. She placed one hand against the locker for support. That was too close. Much too close. She looked back inside. The envelope. The photograph. The message. Everything inside this locker had been waiting for her. But then something caught her attention. Something hidden beneath the envelope. A small object covered in dust. Maya reached inside and pulled it out. A voice recorder. Old. Scratched. Almost forgotten. But there was one strange thing about it. A tiny red light was blinking. It still had power. Someone had left it there knowing that one day, someone would find it. Maya stared at the device. Her hands trembled. Slowly, she pressed the play button. For a few seconds, there was only static. A rough sound filled the air. Then... A woman's voice. Weak. Frightened. Breathing heavily. "If anyone finds this..." The recording crackled. Maya froze. The voice sounded like someone speaking from a place of fear. "...my name is Elena." Her eyes moved to the photograph. The woman in the picture. The woman whose name she had just heard. Elena. "I don't have much time." The woman's voice shook. "They've discovered what I know." Maya listened closely. The fear in Elena's voice was impossible to ignore. "If you're listening to this..." A long pause followed. "...it means I never made it out." Maya's chest tightened. Elena wasn't leaving a normal message. She was leaving a final warning. The recording continued. "They're not after me." Silence. A few seconds passed. Then Elena whispered: "They're after Maya Williams." Maya stopped breathing. The entire world seemed to disappear. Her name. Not someone else's. Hers. Why had Elena been afraid for her? How did she know what was going to happen? The voice continued. "Someone inside Blackstone Holdings is working with them." Maya's eyes widened. Blackstone Holdings. Ethan's company. The company he had built. The company she had watched him sacrifice years of his life for. Her hands became colder. "They've been planning this for months." The recording became weaker. "The crash..." A pause. "It wasn't an accident." Maya closed her eyes. She already suspected it. But hearing someone confirm it made the truth feel more real. The crash that changed her life... The crash that made the world believe she was dead... It had been planned. But then Elena said something that confused her. "It was a mistake." Maya frowned. A mistake? What mistake? Before she could understand, the recording filled with static. Elena's voice became harder to hear. "I hid the evidence where no one would think to look." A pause. "If you want the truth..." Another crackle. "Find the Blue Ledger." Then silence. The recording stopped. Maya stared at the voice recorder. The Blue Ledger. Those three words repeated in her mind. What was it? Where was it hidden? And why was it important enough for someone to kill over? She slowly lowered the recorder back into the locker. Her mind was filled with questions. But then she noticed something. Something carved into the metal shelf underneath where the recorder had been placed. Four words. Written deeply into the surface. Like someone had used a sharp object to make sure the message would never disappear. DON'T TRUST SARAH. Maya felt the blood drain from her face. Sarah. Her best friend. Her closest friend since university. The woman who had stood at her funeral. The woman who had cried over her coffin. The woman who had held her mother's hand and said goodbye. "No..." Maya whispered. She shook her head. It couldn't be true. Sarah was the one person she believed she could trust. But then another thought entered her mind. What if the people closest to her were the ones hiding the biggest secrets? Maya looked down at the message again. DON'T TRUST SARAH. For the first time, she realized something terrifying. The enemy wasn't somewhere far away. The enemy might have been standing beside her all along.
